In a previous blog, I reported spotting a dog in a nearby park system upon driving home from work. I recalled reading on an employee’s bulletin board a story of a missing dog. The dog owner’s home had been burglarized and the thieves peppered sprayed the young dog. The door must have been open and the traumatized pup ran away despite wearing a radio-controlled collar.

Letter to a Perfectionist
One of my greatest regrets in life is being a perfectionist. Maybe "perfectionist" is a nice way of putting it. If you've ever been called
you might be in this boat with me. Whatever this malady is, it's kept me from living a life of joy, freedom, and abandon to God. I've been fearful, stressed, anxious—never rising up to my own expectations or letting anyone else…

I AM
While shopping recently with a good friend she held up a garment for me to check out and I made an off-hand remark about how that would not fit my fat posterior. During the course of the excursion, there were several times I made remarks about myself that were less than kind. At one point my friend pointed out to me, sweetly, that I needed to quit talking so negatively about myself. Harrumph!
I know better than most what negative self-talk does to a person. Dan and I teach…

New Year Reflections from “The Bishop’s Wife”
By: Steve Parker
The New Year is a time for reflection. The Bishop’s Wife starring Cary Grant as the angel Dudley sent to help a bishop and his wife made me consider my focus.
The movie tells the story of a…

Remembering Zig
Late last month one of my favorite mentors, Zig Ziglar, passed away. Reflecting on Zig's life and his impact on so many thousands of people across the world brought back special memories of times I have spent under his teaching and leadership. During the early 90's my wife and I lived in the Dallas, TX metroplex. One of my favorite memories of that time was being a member of Zig Ziglar's Sunday…

Say NO to New Years Resolutions
Relating my sudden headache to the drastic weather change, I cleared my thoughts and re-focused my energy on setting up the Total Body stations for the Thursday evening class. After warming up the students with squats, jumping jacks and lunges, I started my stop watch to time each exercise. Thank goodness my headache seemed to be easing. Then, when I glanced down at my stopwatch, a new issue arose. The large numbers on my watch were fuzzy and almost impossible to read. As I lifted my eyes to…

Quietly listen and you can hear it. The slow but steady rhythm. Tick tock, tick tock. With each new sound the clock makes, we draw ever closer. Then it happens. The clock strikes midnight.
Except for maybe a few nights a year, it's an event that largely goes unheralded. However, on December 31 the world takes notice.…

If you spent your time at work attempting to work faster and harder you're a by-product of the Industrial Age.
If your company slogan was work smarter, not harder- you're a by-product of the Industrial Age.
If the organization you work for splatters the community with billboard and newspaper advertisements' its marketing believes it's still lives in the Industrial…

On December 27, 2012, Heath Miller was voted the Most Valuable Player on the Steelers football team by his teammates. It is the first time in the history of the Steelers' team history that a tight end received this recognition. Miller didn't win this title because of one or two spectacular plays, but because of what he did on every play during the season.
Heath's position as "Tight End" is not one of the more glorious positions in football; they aren't typically making the huge…

Owe You, Kid!
I come here today not to entertain you
With song, dance, a laugh or two
Those things are fine, especially with some wine
But today I have something else on my mind
At times I feel weary, weighted down by this life
It can make me cranky. Ask my poor, dear…

What to do when you get a short check :)
Well, here it is. Our first short check since John has gone back to work.
Yay back to work!
Boo short check.
Since I knew a few days in a advance that he would be receiving some weird sort of holiday pay check (and not the good weird holiday check way where you make triple time), I had some work to do. For this week’s groceries, I had to buy more of the…

2013 – The New Year
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas this year. It is hard to believe that we are at the end of 2012. There is a lot of wonder and anxiety going into 2013. We have the fiscal cliff we are facing, struggling economy, the tragedy in Connecticut and basically a divided country. I wished I could say that I could solve those problems overnight, but no one can and a quick fix usually sets us up for a future failure. I believe…
