How to Measure Success

Posted on February 12, 2009 at 3:00pm 0 Comments

My first test of the year, a local outdoor club hike/run race, was a success but not for the reasons you might think. Yeah, I won the overall contest but that wasn't my main goal. My main objective was to compete against myself and beat my best time from my earlier practice runs. Mission accomplished! I beat my own time by 30 minutes and ran a well planned race. Most of my competition got lost on the course so pre-hiking the course ended up being a… Continue

For those training for an upcoming outdoor adventure, this book does an excellent job of preparing you by improving your fitness level specific to the activity. Not only is the book packed with valuable reference material, but it also explains the info in easy to understand instructions. I use Doug as my personal trainer and rely on him & his wife's instructional DVD to prepare for adventures like climbing Mt. Rainier.

It's Not Whether You Win or Lose But How You Play The Game, or Is It?

Posted on December 30, 2008 at 5:35pm 0 Comments

It never fails, when a group of people get together for any sport or outdoor activity, it usually turns into a competition. Even something as laid back as a scenic hike gets turned into a contest to see who gets to the top or end first. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I'm typically one of the instigators or competitors. The observation was verified when my local hiking club scheduled their own Hiker Race-off to see who's the fastest hiker in… Continue

It's funny how within the same group of hikers out on the trail, you can have several smaller groups that are so different from one another. Yes, they have hiking in common but sometimes that's it. In my experience, you always have the Turtles and Rabbits; Whiners & Doers; Fitness Freaks & Tree Huggers; Tourists and Travelers; City Slickers and Cowboys; Leaders and Followers.

Hi Kevin. I'm one of the Groups administrators for this site and I noticed your group for Adventure junkies has been inactive for quite some time. I would really love to see you continue this group or hand it off, but if you don't think that's going to happen, please let me know and I'm happy to remove it. Basically, any group that is inactive over 90 days gets a little note from me. :) Thanks so much. ~ Jason

Kevin, I love what you're doing here!! I can't wait to show my husband. If you lived here, we would all be good friends for sure. We're fitness junkies too! And we're honeymooning in West Virginia this September: white water rafting, rapelling, rock climbing, zip-lines, kayaking, mountain biking....I can't wait!

Great - I can definitely use the feedback!

Regarding branding - did you work with both Dan at Kevin at some point and decide you liked what Kevin could do?

Neato about your daughter! Also, just so I don't misrepresent myself, my "sight seeing" flying is really just me flying around by myself or one other person - the only people I've ever taken up with me are instructors and my wife.

Interesting! I'm working with Dan Miller right now - helping me to refine the business I'd like to start.

If you have the time, could you view my thread in the 'Business Ideas' forum? I'd genuinely appreciate your feedback - especially considering it seems we have a lot in common!

Have you ever done any racing schools or anything of that nature? I noticed on your side that you do some skydiving. Cool! I have a PPL, though all of my flying is more "sight seeing" than anything else.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the welcome! I really like your business model. How did you go about getting started?

I am lucky to live in Colorado. Lots of great adventures (christmas tree cutting was the latest - gotta bring a compass next time).

Sounds great. I'm just now getting my legs and lungs back too. Been traveling too much to ride much. Bad knees keep me from doing a lot of other things I'd love to: running, b-ball, etc.

I hear your passion to get into coaching. A great primer is "Book Yourself Solid" by Michael Port. Pick it up and dig in. Growing Coaches is hear to help bounce around your biggest questions and ideas.

Hey Kevin, glad to see you in Growing Coaches! I also share your love for cycling (it seems), as well as a friendship with Kevin Miller. I've heard of him speak often of your work on bucketlistadventure.com. Come on in, the water's great!

Try taking a look at the dvd, Dust To Glory; it's the latest documentary on the Baja. I saw the premier at the Honda Hoot in 2005, and still watch it all the time. Yes, the Black Hills are great riding, just not during Sturgis, (I've been about a half dozen times). If you want to see top-notch riding pictures and articles, go to www.pashnit.com. The host lives in northern CA and has about 3000 pages of pics, rides, maps, narrative, etc. Very very cool.

Thanks for the welcome.
