Anyone who has worked with me knows one of the fundamental principles of the Today’s the Day plan is taking what I refer to as “baby steps.” That’s just making one small change consistently over time. I’ve talked about one of my earliest clients who only agreed to gradually increase her water intake and add in the appropriate amount of natural salt. She was thrilled to find that by just making that one small change over time she lost 7 pounds!
So many people think you have to change everything immediately in order to see any improvement but as my client proved, that’s just not so. Small steps, baby steps feel doable and help you reach new threshholds of health. They also serve as motivation. When you make one healthy change it naturally leads to the next and the next and before you know it you really have made big changes. But you’ve done it in a way that allows you to settle into the changes gradually so you are much more apt to continue.
I heard a doctor tell a story about an obese patient and how he prescribed 4 jumping jacks a day. He asked the patient if he thought he could do 4 jumping jacks a day and he said yes. When the patient returned 3 weeks later the doctor asked how he did and he said he did 50 jumping jacks a day because he thought 4 a day was ridiculous! The doctor would’ve been happy if he just followed through with 4 a day but it inspired him to go further! (Finish here)
