I want a platform that, like a book or a magazine,
I can carry into the bath or leave at the beach. | Walter Jon Williams
We hear a lot about building a platform. There are a number of books, podcasts, and websites that deal with the subject. There is a lot of useful information that can help a budding author or speaker develop a tribe of loyal followers. Apparently the strategy works for some people.
But, there is a problem. Many of us who are in the process of building a platform lack the advantage some experts enjoy. Our previous or present employers aren't high profile publishing or media giants. Our names aren't household words. We can contact everyone we know and still not come up with someone who can write an endorsement for our books. If someone stole our identity, they'd give it back!
So, here is some platform-building advice for regular people:
Are these foolproof strategies? Nope. Success can't be guaranteed. Anyone who tries to sell you a recipe for success includes you in the list of ingredients. Think about it.

Comment by Karen Putz on February 26, 2013 at 11:33am Thanks for sharing, Terry! I'm reaching out, one person at a time and that's what keeps me going. I especially like your advice--live to give!
Comment by Rob Clinton on February 26, 2013 at 9:53am Not matter what stage of the game we're in, everyone has everything they need right here and now to move them forward even a little bit more, and your advice really captures that well. Thanks for sharing this Terry!

Comment by Deborah W. Wilson on February 26, 2013 at 6:36am I like how you said to celebrate what you do have. I'm learning to use that principle in what I accomplish each day too. After my computer crashed and my back up for two months had failed, I realized I had focused on what I hadn't gotten done. That taught me to appreciate what I have (or have done). You'll miss it if it is lost.
Comment by Adam Rico on February 25, 2013 at 11:27pm Great post Terry. I think you should write a book called Plank -a lot of people can identify with slow growing platforms. You're right on the money about living to give. I'm at my most miserable when I forget to keep that as my focus. Thanks for your insight.
