I live with a consistent sense of guilt. Am I the only one out there? I doubt it! It's not a guilt for something I have done, but rather a guilt for things I have not done. I am a true optimist. I believe life can truly be great. I believe I possess the tools and skills to make it great. This is not a post that denies the power of God in your life to bring about great things, rather a post about following through with what God has entrusted you with.

As a small business owner and consummate entrepreneur, I know what it means to have dreams. Sometimes I feel my whole life is a dream because I am so hopeful of things to come. That being said, I often live in a mild state of depression because I haven't fulfilled those dreams. I recently listened to a podcast by my new virtual mentor Michael Hyatt on setting goals and learning how to fulfill them. That podcast single handedly changed the way I see my future. I realized what my problem has been all along. Not a lack of goals, but a lack of follow-through. Like many of you, I feel like I am only living up to a small portion of what God has created me to do. If I died today I would feel bad for not having achieved the many things that were within my reach.

What's next? This is going to be a great display of faith. I am beginning next week. On Monday I will be going to hear one of the world's best motivational speakers.
Andy Andrews is speaking in my hometown at a fundraiser for a local prep school. A $50 ticket is a small price to pay for a chance of a lifetime. Tuesday will be my in-town retreat. I will be laying down the phone, computer, and anything else that will keep me distracted from making my goals a reality. Wednesday is when the fun begins.

I am 38 years old and I am beginning to get gray hair in my beard. The evidence shows I am not getting any younger. Where do I want to be in 5 years? What do I want to be doing? These are just a few questions I will answer on Tuesday.

Do you struggle with the same thing? Not a lack of goals, but a lack of fullfilment? I challenge you to listen to these podcasts and join me as we journey to our potential.

Question:

What is something you have done to help in doing what you know you are capable of? Motivational tips, etc...

Great to hear Jeff!

Re: "I am finally at the place where I am no longer trying, but I am doing." Hey - that sounds like the quote from Yoda: "No! Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try."

You're almost a Jedi, man.

Ken,  I agree, however, this new place where I currently am is a result of hours of coaching in the past.  So, I total agree that coaching is the way to go.  I am finally at the place where I am no longer trying, but I am doing.

Shameless plug: you'd love working with a coach! As a coach, I help people create and work through exciting action plans that help them meet the goals they've set. You've got what it takes to turn potential into reality. There are a bunch of coaches on this site - check us out, Jeff, and invest in coaching.

Nick, that is a great word!

I was recently reminded by Andy Andrews on his latest podcast where he talked about what makes people make difficult decisions in their life in order to bring about positive change. Often, it is understanding what won't happen or won't be possible in your life that brings about the change. Thanks for the comment. Yes, it was great talking with you as well. I know we will meet up again in the future. I felt a strong connection with you and your father at the conference.

Hey Jeff! Great meeting you this past week! I just read your post here and I am reminded of a small goal setting exercise I put all of my health clients through before we ever get started. It's called the "WHY" Factor. I have consistently forced myself to focus on WHY a goal is important and why I absolutely must achieve it. What will happen when I do? Personally, Professionally, Financially, etc. But sometimes the most eye-opening and motivating question is - What will happen if I don't achieve this goal? What will happen if I don't put in the work, or I don't make the sacrifices. What then?

Give it a shot. Why can be pretty powerful stuff...

Cheers!

Nick

Cari,

Thanks for the heart felt response.  I certainly hear you.  I agree with many of the things you have said, however, for my journey, it really is about me being lazy and not doing what God has called me to do.  I have so much potential that I am wasting away!  Well, today was a new day that was started with a schedule.  I am amazed at what I have been able to get done just this morning.  I believe in the saying, if you aim at nothing, you will hit it everytime.  I will no longer be a part of that world.  I want to follow through on what God has placed before me.

Diane, your quote is hilarious! "My dream list is extensive, and full of possibilities. My DONE list, pretty dismal."

Great meeting you and chatting at the after party. I also look forward to hearing great updates from you.

Blessings to you!

Jeff -- Ditto Matt. :)

My dream list is extensive, and full of possibilities. My DONE list, pretty dismal. Boot Camp has been a wonderful, inspiring kick-in-the-pants, full of some very practical, actionable tips and advice. And who can listen to Dan Miller without being convicted and inspired?

What an immense pleasure to get to visit with both you and Matt personally! I'm inspired by the two of you as well. I wish both of you guys all the best, and look forward to seeing what we all follow through with in the near future!

Thanks Matthew!  Great to meet up today.  Yep, I agree about the boot camp giving me structure.  I feel like this weekend has been huge for me with my actions.  I can't wait to see what unfolds in the near future for both of us.

OMGawsh. You just read my mail.  This was such a great reminder and inspiration. Thanks Jeff

One of my best motivators has been the steady input of audio books and podcasts. It helps me in between the flair ups of idea spasms.  Also being at events like Kent Julian's Speak It Forward Boot Camp and hiring him as a coach has helped give me some structure and follow through accountability.

Also just jumping in and finally DOING something.  I learn a ton by doing.  Too often in the past I was frozen with planning, waiting until everything looked perfect. But the biggest problem was until I started the business I couldn't have perceived all I had to learn.

Again thanks for the post Jeff.
