Think you can or think you can’t
As a career coach I’m being contacted by lots of other career coaches right now wondering what to do. The common theme seems to be that with things so tight right now no one is going to spend money on a non-necessity like “coaching.” Please help me understand this – there were 509,000 job losses in the last quarter of last year, 589,000 more in the month of January and over 600,000 in February. How could it possibly be a better time to be in the business of career coaching than right at this very minute?
But what we see is a mindset that pops up regardless of the circumstances. When the economy swings back around and everyone is happy and employed again, those same coaches will be saying that everyone’s happy now and nobody needs our help. Coaches who recognize the opportunity now will also be thrilled when people know they’re in the driver’s seat and still want to explore better options.
Remember the old Henry Ford adage: “Whether you think you can or think you can’t; either way you’re right.”

I love this quote from Henry Ford! I am a self employeed physical therapist working exclusively w/ the senior adult in the Columbia area. I have used this so many times as this population frequently feels they can't improve physically. I quote Mr. Ford, then frequently assist my client in seeing they can improve!

Yes, the power of positive thinking. Whatever you think that you can accomplish you are correct. That is why it is critical to surround yourself with positive thinking people who have positioned themselves for excellence. I like the term cross- pollination! Not only are we strengthened by our positive thoughts but by the positive interactions of others. Like my grandmother always said, "guilty by association".

Good reminder, Dan. Reminds me of the shoe sales who went to Africa and declared there was no opportunity there because everyone was barefoot. Another fellow went and saw tremendous opportunity because everyone.....was barefoot. (And obviously needing shoes.)

Jay -- Yeah to me doing career coaching right now is like fishing in a goldfish pond. All the prospects are close together and easy to find. My biggest concern is turning away so many who are asking for help. Fortunately we have lots of resources -- and offer something for everyone, even if not my personal time.

That reminds me of my old boss during the tech stock market crash said, "this is the best time to be prospecting!" AT the time I looked ta him like he was crazy, but boy was he right. Just like today: so many people's finances were battered, people were confused, and desperately needed guidance. It was much easier to find people who need your help when they have problems not when everything is going well. Thanks for the post Dan!
