Panic: When you think about your weight, do you begin to panic, feeling that you will never be able to do it? That you HAVE to lose a certain amount of weight or else? Does stepping on the scale cause you to fall into a cold sweat? Does the thought of trying on a swim suit or new outfit cause your stomach to knot up? Well that feeling of panic is connected to fear which is a form of stress. Stress is more likely to lead you to emotional eating and releases stress hormones which cause weight gain! The exact opposite of what you want.
Perfection: If you believe you have to “do it perfectly” otherwise you will not succeed, this P may be the reason you are constantly failing. I hate to burst your bubble, but no one does it perfectly. No one. Not me. Not you. Not any one. Why do you think you can or even that you should? Honestly, perfection is highly over-rated.
Powerless: If you’ve tried several (or numerous) times to lose weight and have always ended up failing and gaining it back and more, perhaps you feel powerless to achieve lasting weight loss. I believe it’s important to acknowledge this feeling if you have it. Acknowledge it – but know that it isn’t the truth of the situation. It is simply a past fact. You may not have been successful before, but it doesn’t mean you can’t be now.
Punishment: Do you feel so ashamed and guilty when you “mess up” that you believe you must punish yourself? Again, the truth is this will only push you further into stress eating, frustration and discouragement. A perfect recipe for self-sabotage.
