No, I’m not a psychic, fortune teller or prophet.  I can’t see into your mind and I don’t need to know your history, your academic degrees or your family history.

All I need to do to predict your future is spend a day with you and:

  • Listen to what you say (and)
  • Watch what you do

Your words and your actions will tell me exactly where you are going to be five years from now.

One of our 48 Days Coaches just had a conversation with an old friend of his who predicted what his day would hold —  as they parted he said:  “I’d better to see who won’t hire me today.” What do you think he will experience in the workplace?  His expectations that we are in a recession, everyone is laying off and no companies are hiring will be confirmed by the words he is speaking in advance.

I ran into a guy in Best Buy who said he had downloaded my 48 Low-Cost Business Ideas.  Then he added, “But I’m a technology guy so none of those would work for me.”  That list links to another 1000 ideas, but he’s absolutely right.  None of those will work for him.

The Bible is clear about the power of our words.  Check this out from The Message: “It only takes a spark, remember, to set off a forest fire. A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can do that. By our speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell.” James 3:4-6

Your life five years from now will not be determined by the economy, the political climate, luck, your education, the lottery or your astrological sign.

What kind of future are your words and actions creating?

Questions:

  1. How important is our self-talk?
  2. Isn’t it just playing mind games to talk positively?  Don’t things just happen?
  3. Charlie “Tremendous” Jones once said:  “You are the same person today that you are doing to be in five years from now except for two things: the people with whom you associate and the books you read.” How can I use that to my advantage?
  4. How much can I control who I spend time with – I was born with my family and have to keep my job?

This is powerful, Dan! I agree that the words we speak (internally and externally) determine our futures. Our words pave our pathways. "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit." (Proverbs 18:21) May we love the God-given gift of our speech by choosing language that is life-giving. I look forward to listening to your show; you and Jen are tremendous blessings to me!

Gonna try my best to catch your show with Dan in the morning. Hopefully it won't make me late for work at 7 am. If it does, so be it! :)

Wow Dan - totally agree - our self talk can push us forward to where God is leading or sabotage us and sometimes we don't even realize we are allowing it to happen.  Reading great books and associating with great people (like those in this community) goes a LONG way to improving the future.
