I am the owner of Be True to Yourself. I help pastors rediscover the person behind the collar. As a pastor myself, and the spouse of a pastor, I understand the unique challenges clergy face and feel called to use my teaching and counseling skills by providing life coaching, workshops, and other resources for clergy. I have also written an e-book for the general public, "The Butterfly Principles: 9 Steps to Transform Your Life," which uses BUTTERFLY as an acronym and describes in detail the steps necessary to achieve any significant life change and make the change last. To learn more about the e-book, go to http://www.betruetoyourself.com/butterfly.php.

Did you know Vic Johnson is giving away Napoleon Hill's classic Think and Grow Rich book? You just pay $4.59 shipping in the U.S. I got my copy this way so I know it's legit. Also, if you want to help other people get their free copy and make some m…

This sounds almost identical to what Michael Port says in his book Book Yourself Solid.It is a great book, recommended by many on 48Days, including Chuck Bowen, and each chapter has specific action steps for you to take to get clients. The main poin…

If you are just starting out with teleseminars, as I am, you are probably better off keeping it simple and just talking on the phone. You can get a free conference call line that can handle up to 96 people, and very simple instructions on how to use…

Thanks for your reply, Bridget. Narrowing my target market has certainly helped me clarify what I have to offer and where to find the people who would benefit from my services. I've updated my website and changed my newsletter to reflect that new em…

Thanks for this post, Dan. The NFL analogy is great and I think I will use that when I turn down clients. Starting my own business has made it crystal clear to me that attitude is everything and failure is a necessary stepping stone to success. At f…

I agree - and in fact I've already had several people suggest that I start offering the life coaching and workshops I currently market to clergy to clergy spouses as well. I suspect that will happen naturally as word of mouth spreads about my servic…

I received your note regarding perfectionism and fear of failure. If you want do delve deeper, you might want to read, "Performance Addiction," by Arthur P. Ciaramicoli, Ed.D., Ph.D. Perhaps the worst part of perfectionism is that it can lead to a feeling of being beaten before you ever begin since you cannot meet your own standards. This can lead to depression. There is at least one medical model that builds on this concept -- loss of being able to control ones life because of either judgement by self or others. It's a little like "learned helplessness." The key to overcoming perfectionism is to get the issue "outside your head." Put your thoughts into actions as opposed to ruminating on them where you can easily sabotage your own ideas. I realize this is easier said than done, but if you can remain present to avoid worrying about the outcome it will help.

Hey Wendi, glad to see you join Growing Coaches. And, 48 Days Seminars was a good choice as well to help you teach the workshop. Growing Coaches is filling up with budding coaches just like you. I'm kind of the "Head Coach" out front waving the flag, glad to share as much of it with you all as possible!

When Pastors Need a Pastor

One of the responsibilities of pastors serving congregations is to visit members who are hospitalized, home-bound, grieving the deaths of loved ones, or otherwise in need of pastoral care. What happens when the pastor is the one in need of care, though?

While parishioners can certainly visit and pray with their pastor, this role reversal can be awkward for both. Furthermore, the pastor’s role as leader of the congregation makes it inappropriate to share too much information about his or her per… Continue

Failure IS an option - a GOOD one

I’m currently reading Failing Forward by John Maxwell, one of many books which address the topic of failure as a necessary step on the path to success. Of course, most of us hope to skip that step, but it is unrealistic to think that we will. In fact, Maxwell writes that he knows of only one factor that separates those who consistently shine from those who don’t... (click here to continue reading and comment)

Midlife = New Life

I’m currently reading a wonderful book, It’s Only Too Late If You Don’t Start Now, by Barbara Sher. The subtitle is “How to Create Your Second Life After 40,” and the main point of the book is that midlife is the perfect time to rediscover who you really are and start a “second life” that can be better than ever.

Since I turned 40 last November, I’ve been reading quite a few books about midlife, and they all say something similar. Each acknowledges the reality of a midlife “crisis” - a time of… Continue
