FIRE FOR EFFECT: What the Navy taught me about being an Entrepreneur

One of the classic images of the Navy is the Battleship firing all guns broadside.  You can see the flames and the shock wave.  You can imagine the impact of the 16 inch shells.  Nine projectiles, each weighing as much as your car, simultaneously hit a target over 10 miles. This iconic image taught me more about marketing than I learned in my MBA.  Since you paid for my college education (Annapolis Class of ’87) it’s only…See More

Merchant Fees can really eat into your bottom line.  I'm always interested in who others use.For the last 4 years we've gone with Authorize.net and Bank of America.  The service and fees were reasonable for us.  Since our accounts were with BOA, funds were deposited the next day (cash flow is king!)We recently switched our foreign sites to PayPal and have been very impressed (no affiliate links - honest assessment).  It seems that eBay who owns PayPal and Braintree is getting very aggressive in…See More

How about your personal life? Any specific goals or achievements or dreams you are pursuing (or want to pursue)?
I used to dream of retiring, but the older I get the more I am enjoying my business life (can't call it work). My dream is to use my talents to do creative things with friends until the Lord call me home. My proudest accomplishment and most cherished thing is my family, including my first Granddaughter due in June 2014.
What would you say are your strongest talents? How are you 'wired' and what can you offer to the world (it's OK if you don't know yet, but knowing is key to pursuing your dreams!)?
Type A overachiever. Gallup says I'm a Maximizer, Activator, Achiever, Individualist and a Mentor. DISC says I'm a a high D, I. I continue to learn and build on a diverse background that only makes sense in the rear view mirror: Naval Officer (yes I ran nuclear reactors on the largest ship), corporate world, sales, management, entrepreneur.

Why April 11th is not Independence Day

Posted on July 4, 2014 at 12:00pm 4 Comments

Have you ever considered that we mark our nation's Independence Day on the day we declared it, not the day someone else acknowledged it?

  • On July 4, 1776 we declared independence
  • On April 11, 1783 Great Britain acknowledged it.

When our founding fathers decided the only thing they were certain was that the following days were going to be tough....very tough.  Yet we remember being free when we decided, not when someone else…

If you're not a salesman, then artist don't exist

Posted on June 22, 2014 at 5:30am 3 Comments

Recently I met a friend who proudly and definitively declared "I am not a salesman"  While he had successfully sold in the past, certain areas of sales clashed with his very being.  Things like cold calling and high pressure sales made him so uncomfortable that he concluded he was not, and could never be a salesman.

What if we used his same criteria to define artists.  Was Picasso an artist?  Sure he could paint and sculpt, but what about the other areas of art.  Could he create art…

Hey Tom: I am just now seeing your comment that you left quite some time ago.  Thanks for mentioning my podcast to a couple of others.  I will actually be presenting at a conference during the 48 days get together in June, but I will be there in September.  Look forward to meeting you then.

Tom,

Thank you for your kind words. I am working on a podcast that I hope to be able to use my knowledge to establish authority, then to give away basic information and make more advanced information available for a modest price. I also plan on suggesting products which I will have an affiliate relationships with. I would also like to explore possibly offering classes and/or coaching. I have taught classes in the past at the extension office, so I do have experience teaching and or speaking to a group. I welcome any advise or insights you  may have. Thank you for your time and advise. ~ Michael
