Trying to break free and move forward

I am going to take a chance and reach out to this community, which has always been so amazingly generous and helpful. On Kent Julian's advice today, I went and wrote in my journal. I started with a chronicle of what I had been working on today and finally got to a point where I started to address my underlying concerns for my lack of success in many areas of my life. I wrote: "I am still feeling like my life is a mystery to me and I can't seem to make sense of anything. I am concerned that there…See More

Profile Information

How did you hear about 48Days.NET, and what do you hope to get out of being a part of this community?
Probably through the 48days.com newsletter, but I don't remember.
What is your current work situation? Employee, self-employed, generating any income on your own?
I was laid off, so now I am unemployed and listening for my calling.
And then...what is the goal/dream you are striving for regarding your work life?
Freedom to work less than 40 hours a week doing something I enjoy (probably artistic or outdoorsy) with enough disposable income to pursue my dreams and to give.
How about your personal life? Any specific goals or achievements or dreams you are pursuing (or want to pursue)?
I met my goal to move to the Portland, OR area in October 2009 and am settling in. My next biggest goal is to become debt-free (my son calls me a Ramsey-ite) by the end of 2012. I am working through Toastmasters International to become a Competent Communicator and Competent Leader.
What would you say are your core competencies? How are you 'wired' and what can you offer to the world (it's OK if you don't know yet, but knowing is key to pursuing your dreams!)?
I tend to get most excited about artistic and outdoorsy pursuits and brainstorming ideas. I like working with my hands. Dancing is my passion. I also really enjoy sharing my knowledge and helping people to grow. As a result, I am considering personal coaching, writing self-help/inspiration books, adventure/travel guide, photographer, public speaking, and dancing.

Laid off and listening for my calling

Posted on May 23, 2009 at 8:30am 8 Comments

I have been so caught up being in the rat race that I have been too exhausted to participate much on 48Days.NET, but that is all changing.

I was laid off on Monday, May 18, 2009, but it is a blessing and not a crisis. See, I saw the "writing on the wall" and have been preparing for the possibility for a while. In preparation I had paid off my smallest loan and sold my car. So my debt/expenses decreased by roughly $400/month. When my unemployment insurance starts up, it will be nearly… Continue

How does one pull off a charity event?

Posted on January 27, 2009 at 4:30pm 1 Comment

I am on the Board of Directors for a Film, Art, and Music Festival to benefit a charity (proceeds above cost will be donated) this summer in Colorado Springs, CO and we are brainstorming how to pull this off. We are all pretty new to this. The main organizer has done it 4 times, but with only mediocre success. This is his first attempt at having a Board of Directors.

I was hoping that there are some people on this site with this kind of experience.

Particularly, we want to… Continue

Coincidence?

Something interesting happened to me yesterday. First, to put the story into context, you need to know that I am an amateur photographer just starting out. I have been practicing the law of attraction to bring the resources, knowledge, and people that I need in my life to pursue this goal. Specifically, I want to digitally photograph nature and want to sell online and for publications because I don't want to be tied to a brick and mortar store.

So, yesterday, I get home and walk into… Continue

That's super news Shannon!  So glad to know you're doing well.  I'm continually strengthening my quads, etc as I find my knees feel best when they're strong.

Here's to being pain free!

Congrats on your knee!  It's good to back, isn't it?

Hi Shannon. I've found that it's often those who are closest to us who have the most difficulty embracing and believing in our dreams. It's usually well-intentioned; they just don't want to see us fail, be hurt, or become disappointed. They don't realize that they are like the crabs in the bucket pulling us down from the the brink of escape.

Don't be deterred. Let your heart and passion be the louder voice.

Hi Shannon,

Glad to hear you found a TM group already. I'm sure you'll add a lot of value. As for the Superbowl, you'll have to let me know who wins!

Hope your knee surgery went well Shannon. I've had six, so I know what you're going through. Rehab is the key!

Shannon,
Bremerton is a bit sleepy but trying hard to revive itself. The city expanded the marina near the ferry dock, new condos were built close-by and construction is continuing for a tunnel that will carry traffic to/from the ferry without interfering with foot traffic. I've only been here a little over four years. The downtown thirsts for small businesses. Regarding your stock photo pursuits: there are lots of tiny agencies willing to take on newer talent so maybe Google "stock photography agency" and look for the tinier ones. Another tip is to be careful about giving away your work for free just so you can get your foot in the door. Places typically have set fees they'll pay for a body of work or a themed portfolio of work. Then again, these days everything is negotiable.

Hi Shannon,

I did a year of Toastmasters and was part of a very creative and fun group of people from various backgrounds. There were several seasoned communicators in the group who added value to the group by mentoring the newbies like me.

I learned so much and had so much fun learning! I highly recommend TM to everyone because no matter what job or career you're in, you can always benefit from improving your communication skills.

Look for a group that fits you and your goals, as each group has a unique personality. If the rules haven't changed, you can check out a group for up to 3 weeks before committing.
