Michelle got the message you posted through Pursue Your Calling but couldn't for the life of me find it on the site to respond.  I'm no expert - still feeling my way with my own website - but for me personally, what you described sounds very interesting and I would love to see the shirts - so I think a website where you can showcase them would be a great idea.

Let me know when you have a way to showcase them - I'd love to see them and would certainly be interested!!

God bless your efforts.  Ann

Michelle,

If you have decided to TM this item, then I would suggest contacting a TM attorney in your area. This will be the easiest and safes way to determine if you have the right choice (TM vs Patent) for you product. (Consultation is usually free). From that you will be able to list ™ next to your product name. Once you have this protection you can feel free to show your idea to as many people that will look at it.
For instance, my fist product was a tool used in Fiber Optics. I decided I could not find anything on the market like it. So I brought drawing and descriptions of it to an attorney and had him file a preliminary patent. This allowed me to show the product without fear of anyone copying it. I had a prototype made once I had a mechanical drawing done. The prototype was made from a polycarbonate material, it wasn’t what the final product was going to be made from but it worked. This allowed me to bring the tool to local phone companies and offer it for sale. I make a short video to send to anyone I had an e-mail address for as well. I also located cable installers in my area and showed them how it worked. Once it caught on with a couple installers, I talked with a couple distributors of cable and they started carrying it as well.

Hope this set you in the right direction? I attached my first video with the prototype, hope you can view it.

Branding is along the line of what a Disney would do, they allow each company, or any companies use the image or character for the product they are selling for a fee.

Good luck on your venture, and if I can help let me know.

Michelle,

Market size and marketing is a big part, but have you proven your concept or prototype? You need to ask yourself.
1st) Does anyone have a different version of your idea (competition)? If yes, what are you going to do to make you product better, or less expensive to make people use yours over the competition?
2nd) is this a totally new idea, and you have seen nothing like it ever. This will be done with hours of research using resources (internet, people, books, and fieldtrips).
The time will come when you have to decide even with all your research, do I take the risk, will it out weigh the reward? When it comes to prototypes they can be easy to make, depending on the mechanics of the item. My first prototype I ever made was made from a piece of urethane and a razor blade (very ugly).
I have people that do cad drawing and contacts with engineers and people who do prototype work. Maybe if you give a general description, without telling me what it is, I could help guide you better.
Let me know if I can help you in any way.

Michelle,

I am on my third product development project, and have a list of things I would be interested in trying. I have product sourcing as well, so I have a list of resources to use. Do need help with something?
