What is your current work situation? Employee, self-employed, generating any income on your own?
Sales Tax Analyst employed by Heritage Propane LP. After June 1 will be full time consulting/freelancer as a result of corporate buyout.

This is the ore boat painting in oil on display at Williamson County Fair this past summer. My how times flies. It took second place- which was great! Besides that it's just plain fun to see your work on public display...a bit un-nerving I'll confess, but wonderful indeed.

A few tips to keep in mind if you have someone else prepare your tax return:

  • Get an estimate on the fees up front.
  • Do they offer electronic filing for free? Hint: it’s really not “free”  but is there a separate charge?
  • How long has he/she been in business and are they licensed?
  • If they say they are licensed you can check your state’s professional licensing board to ensure.  You can even check complaint history.

Don't Wait for an Audit- Prepare Now

Sitting across the table from an auditor while attemtpting to explain which way is up is a terrible time to realize that you didn't do the bookkeeping.

Keeping those books, while it may sound like a nuisance, forms the basis for adequate substantiation of your business activity.  Auditors can tend to assess tax on sales or bank deposits, disregarding expesnes- unless you can document them. Or, a tax deduction is lost because the receipt couldn't be found.  But there's a bigger point…
