How did you hear about 48Days.NET, and what do you hope to get out of being a part of this community?
I read about it in the 48 Days newsletter and hope to get my mind moving again, find some encouragement to keep trying.
What is your current work situation? Employee, self-employed, generating any income on your own?
Currently work in a direct mail house. Bored with it. Hired on to help out a fellow business owner and learn about the direct mail business. Before that I tried to get an organic landscape maintenance company going, leaving a dream job turned nightmare job of 10 years, to start it.
And then...what is the goal/dream you are striving for regarding your work life?
Honestly, I don't know. At this point I'm scared to try anything else. Every time I try something I've ended up hating it.
Update 01/04/09: I do know that as a young person in Southern California, I thoroughly loved summer camp and the mountain top experience that I had each summer, both at summer youth camp and at family camp with the rest of my family. I do have a dream of "owning" such a camp ground/conference center one day. I use "owning" loosely as I would merely be running it for our Lord and Savior. This is a dream that I keep coming back to. I did work as an outdoor ed teacher at one of the conference centers for about a year and as I think about it that was my first job.
Update 6/12/2009: http://www.48days.net/profiles/blogs/looking-for-my-passion-an
How about your personal life? Any specific goals or achievements or dreams you are pursuing (or want to pursue)?
My Dad worked a lot growing up as most Dads do. I wanted to be different. By the time my daughter is 10 I was hoping to be retired. In other words not need to work for any reason other than I want to. Able to take off and go on "vacation" on the spur of the moment. The dream is not dead, just dwindling real fast. She just turned 9 Nov. 2008.
What would you say are your core competencies? How are you 'wired' and what can you offer to the world (it's OK if you don't know yet, but knowing is key to pursuing your dreams!)?
I like to encourage people and help find answers. I do enjoy teaching when I have something to share. From safety practices to healthy (organic) living and landcare and a whole lot in between. I am`looking into becoming an Motorcycle riding instructor.

Looking for my passion: an update

I have been trying to figure out what it is that I truly enjoy. I see all these different things that intrigue me but I haven't the passion to do them full time, i.e. my landscape maintenance business. I did it for 4 yrs+/- and I couldn't stand it any more after only the first 10 months, I was ready to throw in the towel. However, I had already invested too much money to tell my wife I couldn't go on so I kept at it, trying, learning more, so that I could make a go. I just knew I could do it if…See More

Gene,
I read your profile and let me say...I have a GREAT book for you! Ive read them ALL but this one you will totally "get" yourself and why you are the way you are. Your might be a "scanner" which can be confused with ADD. ( not dismissing ADD but consider the possiblity your not).
This book made me feel so much better and that I dont have to change and learne how to work with the gift.
Author is Barbara Sher- 2 books. #1. I could do anything if I only knew what it was. and #2. Barbara Shers Idea book. ( has other books relating to same subject...she really understands "us" types.)
Im moving to Lincoln, Ne for 4 months to accompany my fiancee as a coach for an independent league. To say the least, Im scared. Of course, CA is falling apart, ha. But her idea book is giving me tons of ideas on little side business's to start that are perfect for "scanners" or add'ers. Im bracing myself for "take -off" when I get there. We will need the money badly.
I think you will find comfort and insight with the books mentioned. All the best to you. Sue PS. Im blogging my trip and will have a post on what business;s I chose and how they worked out if you want to follow my blog let me know.

Hello Gene...
I wanted to answer your questions related to my series for children...Sorry for the delay, but I don't have much internet access these days since I don't have it at home or work. My series that you asked about is still only on paper; I want to do a website for it, but given my lack of access to technology (I need a new computer and the resources to have internet at home) I have not gotten very far at all. It's a good series and one that has been sorely needed in the marketplace. I just have not yet found an animated production group with the vision or resources to undertake it. I want to write it, but have no money to produce such a project. But, I keep trying!

Hey Gene! Welcome to the Group. We are practically neighbors. I live in Franklin, TN. I actually bought my Prius in Columbia...at Roberts Toyota.

I read your profile and also the comments from Hal on your page. Hal had lots of great advice. I'm so sorry that you are unhappy and that things haven't worked out for you. They say if you want to find out what your "real" passion is to think back to your childhood....to the one thing that really gave you the most pleasure. That one thing....is most likely your passion. For me...it was children. I have always known that my "calling" was to work with children in some capacity....to help make their lives better. If I could find a job working with children, I would do it in a heartbeat. And if I had a rich husband....I would do it for free (i.e. work with a non-profit.) But, alas, that is not the case. I need to earn a living doing something that will pay my bills and non-profits don't pay very well and I don't have a degree in social work. So, I have decided that my work with children needs to be something that I do on a volunteer basis and that the career I have needs to be flexible enough to allow me the time to do that work.

I, too, was very unhappy in a "job". I was tired of being over-worked and underpaid and working with a company and people who were dishonest and corrupt. I was just a means to "their" end...not mine. I didn't want to trust my future in their hands. So, I "fired" my boss and started my own business. It took real guts to do that. Do I miss that big fat salary.....I sure do. Has this past year been a difficult one for me...yep. I've had to seriously cut my expenses and change my lifestyle to fit my income. It's been really hard. That first year is the hardest....trying to establish a good solid client base. But, I've never been happier. I am certain that I am on the right track and I'm not looking back. I work really hard every single day....and I am hopeful that the fruits of my labor will pay off soon.

They say that if you find a career that you love, you will never work a day in your life. Like I said earlier....you would do it for "free" if you could...because you love it that much.

Gene, I urge you to search your soul...and try to figure out what your "true" passion is.....and what you feel is your calling or mission in life. I think when you have that answer, you will know what it is that you need to do.

Good luck, my friend. Hang in there. I know it's tough. You are in the right place. This site is full of really good people with lots of great information. I hope this new year will be your best year EVER!

I'm thinking about your response. As a divisional employee for the salvation army, I am familiar with disaster response. You know, one thing that never gets addressed in a disaster plan is the restoration of the common areas, and the re-landscape beautification. Might be fun to open a non-profit and solicit $ for such a cause, then undertake a "second wave" initiative to get disaster-oppressed areas re-beautified. In fact, "Second Wave" sounds like a good name for it..........

I noticed a couple of things in your response. First, if I were your coach, I'd ask you to dig deeper into your lottery answer. Your initial response was probably more on target than you know. When you say, "just cruise for a while," what does that mean? Describe how you are going to "cruise." I mean really, you've won the lottery! How will you spend your day-to-day time? Helping people? What people? How would you help them? Also, with reference to your current job, "if I were in your shoes," I don't think I would leave the job right away. What I would do is find another income source, (notice I did not say job), that is your outlet that you do not for the $, but because it is fun. For me, I walked into Arrow Stage Lines one day in 2004 and said I wanted to drive a motorcoach. First, they checked to see if I was breathing, then they checked my sanity, and finally I was hired. I have been driving over-the-road motorcoaches on the weekends, (whenever I wish), ever since. I do it for fun, but the $ pays a few bills too. The more income sources you have, (some just for fun), the less reliant you are on that j-o-b.

Sounds like you are another one of those motorcycle addicts; welcome to the club. MSF hounded me about teaching the courses, but I didn't want it to take away from my own riding time, which it would have severely. Your FJR is a great machine; I've ridden one and yes you are correct, it is made for the open road. Regarding direciton, do you have a story to tell? Something unique about being you? And answer me this: when you win the lottery, what are you going to do, day in and day out? Not generally, over the long term, but daily, week-to-week. It's how you choose to spend your day that may provide clues to your passions, and a gateway to a great way to make a living. And by the way, if you have discovered a passion, make your life great---and do more of it!

Read your profile. Actually, I saw the pic of the bike, which motivated me to read your profile. Hang in there dude; it is not unusual for guys in your stage of life to be searching for purpose and passion. You probably have all the answers to your questions, but they just haven't been drawn out of you yet. It took me many years to face the fact that my passion for motorcycles was where I needed to put my efforts. Now I am headed for several income sources from the bikes--I currently buy bikes on ebay, fix & flip them. Sometimes I just part them out. I get a better % return on my invested $ than anything the stock market could ever offer. Then of course, every motorcycle vacation I take is now a tax write-off, etc. So be patient, but contemplative; ask yourself questions like, "What would I do if I knew I would not fail?" Write down all the answers, no matter how strange, and see if you don't begin to see a pattern emerge. Might tell you something about you...

Hi Gene,

Sounds like you are ready for a change like the rest of us! I have a couple options to suggest - first in response to your desire to retire and vacation when you want to - I am a Leisure Travel Consultant for WorldVentures and we have something that you really need to see -

I just returned from a conference held at the Gaylord Opryland hotel this weekend - we are having a presentation TODAY Tuesday, Dec 16 at Hotel Preston, 733 Briley Pkwy, Nashville, TN 37217 at 6:45pm -

The presentation will be by one of our top people in the organization -

You will discover how you can travel around the world at wholesale pricing, and or make a substantial amount of income in the travel industry that is at $8 trillion this year - there is much more the company has to offer that you have to see - it is 90% visual - so come hear what we have to offer -

Also, I would encourage you to connect with a Life Coach - this is someone who looks at your present situation (where you are today in life) and where you want to be and helps you to identify the steps you need to take to reach your goal/passions etc - I am in the process of obtaining my coaching certification and would like the opportunity to take you through that process if you are interested in learning more about it.

You sound very ambitious and I believe you can have what you desire - just need to figure out a way to get there!

Glad you are in the 48 Days community!

Hope to see you tonight!

Diana Cox

I am confident you won't be disappointed - this is an opportunity that could change your life -

Not really. But some times I wonder.

When I woke up this morning I must admit I wondered "Why?" Why did God not just take me home last night. Why do I have to go to this stupid job? The money part I could get delivering pizza's a couple hours a night. Then I would be free to do what I want during the day. Oopps not enough money. There's not even enough to pay for the gas to go volunteer somewhere. I’m so beat I just wish it would end. My wife just wants me to get a job that makes money and… Continue
