My 48Days - Day 48 - Mission Accomplished - Independence Day

Brian is coming home! Three and a half years of not being where I need to be are officially over.First of all, I want to thank you all for the support, wisdom, encouragement and guidance throughout my journey.Using Dan’s advice, encouragement, and methods I have found a job close to home and will be accepting the offer that I was presented last week. The effort that began on Easter Sunday as a new beginning has fittingly paid it's dividends a few days shy of Independence Day. The significance…See More

My 48Days - Day 40-ish - Serenity with Self

A couple of nights ago, my wife told me something that caught me slightly off guard. She told me that she was proud of me, and “You’re not the man I married. . . in a good way.”Things like this make you think. She’s right. I’m not.I have learned a lot during this process, and even though the goal of getting the new job has not been completely reached I’ve reached an important milestone that I never anticipated and it is perhaps the greatest hurdle that I’ve ever crossed.PEACE.I was preparing…See More

My 48 Days - Days 16 and 17 – “Being yourself” is harder than it looks

This is admittedly going to seem like another “rush job” as I really have not had enough time to truly reflect on the questions asked and give them the time they truly deserve. This two-for-one post should really be divided into two separate posts as they are divergent topics with different themes behind them, but I want to keep the ball rolling a good pace to stay as true to the 48 days as possible, so that is why I have decides to keep them together. I’m already several days behind, but I’m…See More

My 48 days - Day 15 - Wins in the future by learning from sins in the past

Day 15Challenge: Now we are getting to the “nuts and bolts.” Read Chapter Six. Think through how your current resume sells you. Does it position you for what you want to continue doing, or is it just a historical overview of what you’ve done? Explore whether a chronological or a functional resume will serve you best. It’s sort of funny, but the resume that I have sells me pretty well for jobs like the one that I currently have. It does such a good job that by just posting it on the online job…See More

My 48 Days - Day 14 - Stop-doing lists, swan songs, and barbed wire fences

In case you’ve been keeping track, (I know I have) you have noticed by now that I’m not exactly posting every single day as I had originally planned. My excuse for yesterday is that I was battling a freak internal flesh-eating zombie virus that had drained me of all energy that could be put forth to doing anything that could be considered productive and had riddled my mind to a useless, feverish blob of delusion. Lucky for me, I bounced back relatively quickly, although still somewhat shaken.…See More

My 48 Days - Day 13 - Deeper into Introspection

Challenge: Be comfortable with the process of looking inward. Many people look outward too quickly and jump at what appears to be an opportunity only to discover six months down the road that it is not a fit. You are doing the important work now. 85% of the process is choosing the right career path comes as a result of looking inward. 15% is the application of what you then know about yourself in finding – or creating – work that fits. My 48 Days - Day 12 - Passion for Playing

Well here I am at the “quarter pole”. Keeping up with the pace of the pack, but the race is still young. A lot can happen. Today’s challenge is one that I’ve been unsure about from the outset. Let’s see how it goes.Challenge: List your dreams and passions. What is it that you find naturally enjoyable? If money were not important, what would you spend your time doing? When do you find the time just flying by? What are those recurring themes that keep coming up in your thinking? What did you…See More

How did you hear about 48Days.NET, and what do you hope to get out of being a part of this community?
48 days podcast
What is your current work situation? Employee, self-employed, generating any income on your own?
Employee - IT guy. Network security engineer. I'm good at it, but I'm finding that my "right brain skills" are taking over and I'm outgrowing jobs that I'm typically recruited for.

Working away from home during week away from family, only get to visit family on weekends. Been doing this for three years, it's time to come back home even if a paycut occurs. What was once a minor annoyance of working away from my family has developed into a festering torment.
And then...what is your goal/dream for your work life?
First, I need a job close to home. Then, I can focus on my true plan. I'm a writer at heart and need to get things started there. I've got an idea to go to a children's hospital to record the stories there (good and bad) inspirational stuff in a time when needed most (I argue that no matter what the times are like, this is always needed most, but put perspective in context, right?)

This would have to be a volunteer thing to start with possibly. Obviously, I would have to get permission to write the stories. I have no journalistic credentials, nor do I have any sort of writing pedigree. I would need to get started just as a volunteer at first to learn how flexible people would be to telling their stories. I have friends who are photographers that could tell the stories in other ways and I could supply the "thousand words" for each picture.

I don't know if this is viable or not, but I need to do something. My family is dying without me and I see a need to help other while I help myself get back home and where I belong.
How about your personal life? Any specific goals or achievements or dreams you are pursuing (or want to pursue)?
Personal goal 1: Get back home.
Personal goal 2: Figure out my "fire-song".
Personal sub-goal 2.1: Start a blog on this search?

Lately I've been developing a fire in my eyes and song in my heart, but what that fire-song is about yet, I do not yet know, but I know that something important is happening and I MUST respond. I've been listening to your podcasts and it has stoked this fire, so to speak. Along with some of the books you are recommending, I am figuring a lot out, but more information is needed. It is time for action. I think the only way for me to figure it out now is to do something and see what happens. Waiting for things to happen has not worked out so well.
What would you say are your strongest talents? How are you 'wired' and what can you offer to the world (it's OK if you don't know yet, but knowing is key to pursuing your dreams!)?
I have an IT background for networking and network security (Routers, Firewalls, etc) but that is just what I "do". It isn't what I AM. I've figured this much out about myself, at least. I'm good at solving problems by making connections and seeing patterns where most miss them. I do this by thinking constantly in "metaphoric" terms.

I recently read Daniel Pink's "A whole new mind" on a recommendation from a podcast, I think (thank you) and figured out that I'm a lot more right-brained than I thought. I'm in a left-brain field, so I have a real good background for logic and science and all that stuff, but my TRUE talents are in the other half of my head that I've been suppressing until recently.

I'm a writer, it turns out, and I want to exercise these newly found atrophied muscles and I'd like some help on figuring out how to begin doing so. Thanks for being here.
