Thanks, Alan.  I did mine free on Amazon for 4 days which was the max they allowed.  I understand after 90 days I can do a couple of days at 99 cents?

Hi Mike, my website is at www.TheIronJen.com. This might actually make a great discussion too as sometimes the answers can get lost in the comment wall. I noticed you were from Orange Beach, AL.  I was there just last fall as a keynote speaker...what a gorgeous place to live. Best wishes on your quest for narrowing down your niche.

Talking about giving your book away for free I wanted to share this with everyone as some inspiration as to WHY you might want to give your book away for free, even for a short period of time.  Hope this brings some insight to the discussion.

For all of us talking about marketing a book, here is something I came across I thought might be helpful to the group by Tim Grahl:

Good question, Vitalis, which is why I asked Camilla, who seems to be scoring high in the rankings.  Some ideas I've read about are guest blogging for large sites and creating a lead page/opt in magnet to your book on your website, with some "freebies" associated with your book.  I've done that and am working on the guest blogging.  My problem is who do I market it to?  Most people market it on FB but my readers don't tend to hang out there.

I can see that these ladies have the ball rolling. Writing can be exhausting. My first book is now forgotten after less than two months. I am now writing another one and it's tiring. I happen to wonder how to market a book out here. You've said a lot about it but any specific thought?

My fiction writing friends tell me to just "Let the characters speak..." I still think they're a bit kooky and they think I'm a control-freak (they're right), but it works for them. I'm trying very hard to sit back and just let it flow. As I'm looking at it this morning, I'm seeing that it may go longer than what I originally planned by letting it flow, but whatever. It'll be the length it'll be. That's one thing I can't control while maintaining what little sanity I still possess.

I don't have many non-fiction book ideas... more of an article writer myself, but the same thing applies. It's NON-fiction and therefore EASIER. Haha

SO glad you said that about the fiction!  I thought it was just me.  I have dozens of book ideas on nonfiction, but trying to write fiction--difficult to leave out the boring parts! haha!

Free definitely boosts the standings, doesn't it? haha. It's so true though, marketing it to the right people is the key. This book was never about the money, and I knew it was a small niche market, it consistently sells a handful a month. The magazine is growing - and doing well! I'm happy with the direction, and trying now to get it into bookstores like Barnes & Noble in their periodicals. Dealing with large corporations is always slower than I would like, just because of their structure.

This whole kids book thing is kicking my tail! Non-fiction is so much easier for me to write because there's no dialogue required. Sure, I talk all day... but that's different than trying to write the stuff. Still, I'm better than halfway done with the writing, and fortunately editing shouldn't take too long because of the length. The illustrations may very well take until June to finish though!

Just have to keep my eyes on the prize, head high, and carry on, and things will continue to go well. :)

Gail, mine dropped too, big time, after it came off free but that's OK.  My goal is to figure out how to sell it to the right people--those I want to help change!  Starting a magazine is no small feat!  Sounds like you are doing really well, and I am so glad you updated us (I remember when you were just starting it!)
