Sheri...SO GOOD TO SEE YOU!!!!!

I was just thinking of you. Seriously, I was wondering how you were doing. As I've told you, you have rockstar potential :)

Love where you're going. And this is where stick-to-it-tiveness pays off. You're working through the "figuring out" phase and outlasting others who decide to drop out.

Love the insight of how Rotary is not a good fit for you. And I absolutely love this line: "All of this just by going to a meet-up group—amazing once you get yourself out there with the right people." #truth

Your treasure is about to be discovered :)

Hi Sheri,

I'm Bonnie, and I recently joined 48 Days. I've been teaching fitness classes for a little over 30 years now, so your journey is really interesting to me. My own business is not about fitness (I prefer to keep that as an avocation), but I appreciated hearing about your positive experiences with local meet-ups. I don't know why, but I have only availed myself of one or two of these opportunities in my five years of self-employment so far, and when I did, I was so clueless that I didn't have much to give or receive. (I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I didn't even have a business card to offer--talk about being slow to get where you want to go!) I've now scheduled myself to attend two meet-ups that look interesting, and this time, thanks to mentors like Dan Miller and John Lee Dumas (and all his interviewees), I think I'm in a great position to really add value to such an event (and of course, I'm going with a stack of business cards and a much clearer vision of what my businesses are about).

I hope you'll keep posting about your entrepreneurial journey. It's nice to know that others are facing the same challenges and staying motivated to do whatever it takes to figure things out and realize their dreams.

My best to you!

Comment by Sheri Barnes on October 22, 2014 at 12:36pm

Hey everyone,

For those of you that don’t know me I’m MAMA KNOWS FITNESS, aka Sheri Barnes. I ended my speaking Mastermind with Kent back in May. And then I disappeared…(I know Kent, you must have wondered if I fell off a cliff or something)

Well, no cliff, just a little quiet. I, unlike many of you mavericks, seem to take a long time getting to where I want to go. BUT, I always remember Kent saying “If it took you 2 years to reach your goal, would you? How about 5, how about 10?” And so, I persevere.

My biggest challenge has been finding my niche. It’s easy to pinpoint a niche, but for me finding a group where we share values, where they want to hear what I have to say and a group that I want to hang with in order to build a relationship—this is a huge challenge for me. I think I have finally found my niche.

Jen McDonough, I’ve watched you from the beginning and applaud how you have maneuvered the “treasure map” with grace and style. You are a constant example to me that this can be done.

So, what is MAMA doing now? I spent the summer speaking to Rotary Clubs. Great practice, but didn’t really do anything for my business or bookings. To me these clubs seem to be outdated. I can’t even tell you how many people over 75 I ended up speaking to—nothing wrong with that, but not my demographic. Where things changed was when I went to a local networking meet-up. That is where doors began to open.

I just got back from a meeting with a contact from the meet-up where we discussed shooting fitness videos. I’m planning to have an online subscription based monthly workout program. The video owner also started a radio station back in April and we discussed my own radio show (broader topic than just fitness) where MamaKnowsFitness would be a sponsor. He’s even planning to have a TV show in time…and of course, if you know me, you know how much I’d love being on TV! And one more thing, I’m speaking to the meet-up group in December.

All of this just by going to a meet-up group—amazing once you get yourself out there with the right people.

So, MAMA’s back, alive and kicking. I promise to be on here more frequently. Kent, as always, you jumpstarted me and I so appreciate all of your coaching and teaching.

Look for more from me as I slowly move through my treasure map.

Jen and Eric....LOVE reading about your success. So proud of you!!! What makes my heart swell is I know both of you are applying what you've learned. The Speak It Forward system works IF a person consistently works the system.

And BTW, the best is yet to come!!!

Thanks Eric and Alan!!!!!!

Gosh Eric, I thought there were would a huge difference from speaking to 100 to 500 people but honestly, I didn't find it was hard to transition too. I still asked questions of 500 audience as I do for the 100 person audience (for prizes and also just to answer - made it more engaging), but with the bigger audience I wasn't able to have that "conversation" on the answers as much. Still was able to make it personable though by singling out a few people by name that I had met before the conference to personalize it a bit. Perhaps if the group had some good tips for larger audiences, a discussion could be started.

Eric - sending you positive thoughts for your 600 person workshop!!!!! That sounds like it is going to be fun!

Comment by Eric Kulikowski on October 16, 2014 at 5:38pm

Jen, woohoo! Stand O! Way to go. I sense this will be the first of many.

What advice do you have for us regarding speaking in front of such a large crowd? I all be doing a workshop for a 600 person audience next month and have not been in front of that many folks before. Any advice?

Jen CONGRATULATIONS!!! That's HUGE and a great confidence builder moving forward to those larger gatherings you want to be speaking in front of!

SUPER excited for Speak It Forward - it is going to be a blast! Hey Kent, thanks for the UBER app tip for transportation - I will be starting to use this for upcoming trips. For those attending SIF and going to use UBER, you can click HERE to get $30 off your first ride (I will get $30 credit for anyone who uses it too - kind of cool)

Kent, are your SIF spots gone yet?

Also, just a quick update. My talk earlier this week was to my largest audience yet, 500+. Used Kent's speaking formula and ended up getting my first standing ovation. The cool thing is that the audience was packed full of my ideal audience members and had folks from various states...in addition to my surprise, the President of the NATIONAL association was in the audience and offered to pass my info for consideration for their national association yearly conference for 2015 if they were not filled yet or for 2016 consideration.

Haha, thanks Dan! Yes, 2015 is looking mighty fine! I keep saying I'll stop drinking coffee when I grow up..
