Hey Dave - did you get your FTP connection issues worked out?

Comment by Brandon Richards on April 9, 2012 at 7:37am

Here's a link to shows how to install wordpress on Bluehost:

Here's a link that will show you how to use Filezilla:

You also may want to check your router to make sure that the ports aren't closed to ftp connections.

hmm... sounds a bit strange. I host all my clients on my own hosting service, so I don't work with BlueHost as much.

Check your users and password for:

  • Your BlueHost FTP user account - It's likely different than your regular BlueHost username and password, which are also likely different than your WP username and password. That's where I would start looking.
    • If that doesn't work then set up a new FTP user in your BH control panel and try to connect using this new account.
  • See if you can connect using an IP address as your hostname. Usually not encouraged by the hosting companies in a shared hosting set-up, but there is an IP associated with your account and use that instead of ftp.yoursite.com, or see if BlueHost has some sort of other direct link to your account that you can connect with
  • Do you have any sort of port set? Like for SFTP? SFTP uses a different port than a regular FTP connection. Make sure that if you're trying to connect via a regular FTP connection that there is nothing in the "port" field in Filezilla.
  • There are two types of Filezilla - client and server. Make sure you're using the "client"
  • Check your firewall on your computer to make sure it's an allowed application. Different firewalls have different restrictions out of the box, and if Filezilla is disallowed, you won't be able to connect.

I am using wordpress hosted with Bluehost. I am running Windows 7 on my computer. I haven't made changes or used Filezilla for some time. When I did, had no issues. I tried to use it yesterday to add a file to my site when I realized somehow it was uninstalled from my computer. I reinstalled it and ran into this problem. I am confident the problem is not with the login info for my site as I am able to get in through the dashboard with no issues. I've tried logging in with: ftp.mywebsitename.com, then my login info. Also, I'm not too familiar with installing wordpress yet (I paid someone to install and set up my site).

Thanks all.

Hey Dave - welcome to the group! What kind of problem are you having? Who are you hosting with?

Comment by Peter Brissette on April 8, 2012 at 12:40am

You should be able to use simple scripts inside of your hosting account to install the base of wordpress.

As for filezilla you just need to know your hosting account login info.

typically you will connect to your site as ftp.websitename.com and then your username and password.  That should get you connected.

Much easier to use SimpleScripts though inside your Cpanel to install wordpress.

Hi all, I'm new to setting up WordPress. I am currently having a connection problem with Filezilla. Does anyone have any experience with Filezilla?

Rob, in college I played with web design and HTML. Now, being all grown up and such, I spend more time playing doll houses with my girls than I do on the computer. Right now, I am trying to decide what direction to take with my current website. It is on a free weebly hosting page. I have several options open to me. Trying to decide which is the best use of time, energy, and the calling in of favors from computer engineering friends.

Hi Bonnie - welcome to the group! What are you looking to do?

Excited to find this page on 48days.net. My current website is www.ccstudio.weebly.com. The art gallery is really expanding rapidly. I would like to create a more professional web presence. Of course, I also want to keep my overhead costs low. Any advice would be appreciated. I will dig into the discussion boards, too.
