David -

I had a person ask to join my current Mastermind Group, and they brought up this exact issue. I very politely explained to them that the biggest value that I (and the group) bring to them is the ability to connect them with people that can help execute their idea, and asked them to reconsider their thoughts regarding "stealing ideas" and instead take the risk of "sharing ideas."

I’ve been strongly influenced by posts like this one. In a related context, I’ve ranted about NDAs on my podcast and blog. (As a rule, unless a client is willing to pay for a minimum engagement of $10,000 I don’t sign NDAs.)

Here's why I think that type of mindset can be poisonous to a Mastermind Group:

  1. The person has an unrealistic valuation of "their" idea. In short, If over the course of a coffee conversation, or even a few Mastermind groups, I'm able to discover all the unique value propositions of the idea that you've spent years working on, then you probably don't have an idea that a million other people have.
  2. Ideas are a dime a dozen. Execution is king.
  3. No truly great idea can be executed without a team. "hiding the idea" simply limits the people that you can expose who to who can truly help you execute it.

We are starting a new Mastermind group and a couple of questions came up.  One was about "stealing ideas" and how to set-up ground rules for dealing with that, and the other question is if one member gives another member an idea or suggestion for their business that turns out to be a home run idea, who gets credit?  Any one have any ideas or recommendations on how to handle these 2 situations in a Mastermind?  Thanks.

"Pressing Forward" Mastermind Group - I am looking for (5) entrepreneurs who are serious about growing their business and taking action! Looking for entrepreneurs who are willing to learn, share, support, and encourage each other. There is a small fee to join, but I believe it will be well worth it. For details, see http://www.pressingforward.org/mastermind-group/

All the best,Angela

Matt,

I didn't mean to leave you out. My fingers got going on the phone and hit comment. I am just off of Hwy 30 and just and just short of an hour from Ames. So a meet up with you and/or Tom would not be too much of a stretch.

Thanks for the reply guys. Be great to get things rolling.

Tom,

I would be interested in joining in on a conference call. I know that a lot of groups will connect using a variety of different sources and then meet in person on a less frequent basis. Have you gone as far as creating any guidelines or expectations for joining up?

Tom and Garrison - I live in Story City (45 miles north of Des Moines). I would be interested in being in a group - if we could get the time stuff figured out.

Enjoy the day!
Matt
