The Story

Leap is about starting a business and doing your own thing. Jump into the discussions or start your own and let's make it happen!

I used to be an airline pilot.  If I can leave a six-figure job and start my own business unrelated to my major, you can too. I help people start their business and do it full time. I'm also a Professor at the Free Agent Academy, a group Dan Miller started in 2007 to help support people in becoming self-employed.

I host a few weekly shows, among them the No More Mondays Show and Coach Radio. You can read more about my story, but this is a group for you. Jump in and let's make it happen.

Justin - just wanted to let you know I read your comment to Stevie and I clicked the link for your book and ordered it - I am anxious to get into it and learn from you!

Great question Stevie. I do a lot of coaching with folks starting businesses and especially people that want to attend Dave's training as well as coaches who already have and are working to build their business.

I'm more than happy to talk to you on the phone free if you'd like. Shoot me an email or call my office any time to set it up. (919) 342-0801.

I wrote a book about the business of coaching that many have found helpful. That may answer a lot of your questions and is about 6 hours worth of thoughts in there.

You're right in that many people in your area don't have a budget. Most people in America don't. Nobody will buy a budget from you or even care about how to set one up. It's the same reason no one buys shampoo. What they do buy is clean hair and the feelings that come along with that.

As a coach the only thing people buy from you is resolution in their life to reach their goals and dreams. That's what you're selling as a coach and you are the person to help them reach their dreams and goals.

You won't find many mortgage companies or banks that will refer people to you. On the financial side, good referral sources tend to be CPAs and financial planners and advisors. These professionals see a lot of broken people and they usually don't care to help fix their problems.

You can come in and help a financial planners clients free up their income so they have more to invest. If you send that client back the financial planner will be very excited because they'll be making more money.

Steve, I'm also interested in financial and life coaching. Being a business owner for the past 16 years or so in the tool and supply business, I wasn't sure where to start with something totally new to me, so I looked into several financial programs that are available. I just received the Crown Ministries financial course. It was reasonable priced at $150.00 for the couples curriculum and it will show you all the basics of finance, counseling and gives you material to get started right away. You may want to check it out at crown.org. Hope this helps.

Thanks Justin, I have also contacted Jay Perino and he has offered to listen and brainstorm some ideas. I don't even know how to get started in this line of business. I would say that most of the people in my area may not have even heard of a budget much less a financial plan. What if I contact the mortage companies and banks to see if they are even interested. What approach do I take?

Many of us have been in similar situations. How you respond to it will set you up for the rest of your life.

Stevie, I'm excited that you've found your passion and are working towards it. Don't wait to attend Dave's training. Find some people that need help and start right now! Your business will be up and running when you get back from training in 2010 and you'll have a huge head start. I did the same thing and it helped immensely.

I am reassured, always, to see I am not the only one who is still working (in my case) two part time jobs to help my family as I get a business going. I welcome you and wish you all the best and I know we can learn from each other as we progress!

Stevie:
It's so reassuring that others find themselves in the same situation. Sometimes we isolate (and insulate) ourselves as a survival technique. I still seem to be at the stage where I'm deciding what I want to be when I grow up, but my health is starting to suffer as a result of my current situation, so I need to speed up my personal Leap. Dan's 48Days to the Work You Love was actually the impetus to begin my push out of complacency, so it's time for me to reread it to keep the momentum going. Will also check out your Trapped in a Box and your other suggestions.

Good luck with the motorcycle detailing . . .Who knows, it might prove to be more lucrative than the financial counseling!

Welcome Susan,

I to have realized after 31 years in the manufacturing business that my passion is to be a financial counselor but need to be out of debt before I can attend Dave Ramsey's counselor training. I should be able to complete this in 2010. In the menatime I have decided to start a motorcycle detailing business toward my love of bikes and any other idea that might generate income until I can fullfill my passion. What I am getting at here is find your passion and reach, search, and dream until you find exactly what it is you are here on God's great earth to do that makes you feel good and you can feel something in your heart each time you accomplish whatever it is you love to do. Try reading Dan's book "48days to the work you love" and see if that helps. Check out my discussion " Trapped In A Box" , check with Jon Dale he might be able to help with the online business. Their is also a Tech group on this network that might be of help. I am like you I have to generate an income until I can make that first step forward and then maybe I can make that Leap.

Hello all: After my first-ever "counseling" for inadequate performance on my job by someone who hasn't been in the workforce for even 10 years, I realize that after 34 years of steady employment, the traditional workforce is no longer a good fit for me. I've been trapped in the security of a J-O-B for so many years that it's sucked the confidence right out of me. I've got some options, though I need to lay the groundwork. I really want to start an online business, but lack the knowledge of where to begin, particularly in becoming an affiliate partner for a product(s) I believe in. My income is crucial, so I'll have to start part-time and grow from there. Any suggestions for someone just starting out?
