Joel, I'll add my voice to the WordPress.org parade. I know a fair amount about web design, but I'm not a power user. WP has a number of really good themes that you can customize pretty easily. I also like how you can structure your site where you can either have a blog as the landing page or have a more traditional home page.

I'd also recommend working with Andy if you want to do some more advanced topics. I've worked with him on several different occasions, and he will help you get much farther than if you tried to do this totally on your own.

Thanks for the great advice; it was just what I needed.

Right on Justin. Joel, I recommend you look into a Wordpress.org site. They have new plugins published regularly, so I think you'll be pleased with the robustness of the site.

Definitely get in touch with Andy Traub. He really knows his stuff.

I agree with Justin. Wordpress is an easy to use software that I taught my wife to use. The forums and documentation are very good and people in the community are helpful. I use Hostgator and they have a great package for $9.95 a month with mostly pushbutton setups for Wordpress and other things.

We use 1and1 for some ministry websites I run, but I prefer Hostgator for support, price and bandwidth. Been with them 5 yrs and they improve as they go! If you can do MS Word you can figure out Wordpress. If you really are not a tech type at all and don't enjoy DIY, then it might be worth having someone set it up for you. I have several blogs and sites and like Joel, they all run on one account for $6.95/month. We get average of 10K hits a month with no problems.

Have fun!

That's pretty expensive ongoing Joel. I have 8 websites running on 1and1.com and it's only $12 / month. Of course, they didn't design anything for me.

Your best bet is likely either Wordpress (my preference) or Joomla. Go to the members section and search for Andy Traub. Most of my clients work with him for their web needs and he's awesome.

Let me know if you have any questions.

While this is more of a techie website related question (and I posted on the group more focused on internet related issues, thought the experience coaches in this group may have some solid advice from experience. While I have some strong marketing background and want the ability to layout and edit my site as needed, I do not want to actually do a build of a website form the ground up (outsourcing to an expert for a solid basic site design with e-commerce capability is what I'm after).

Any suggestions on website creation/implementation to get an initial site up and running? This site offers specific webpage design (template option) for a $400 set up/design of the site plus $17/month and I'm curious what those who may more website specific experience may suggest: http://www.webcoachingsolutions.com/features.htm

Thanks!

Excellent Joel, thanks for laying a great foundation for the principles that should guide all of us coaches. If I may paraphrase Burg & Mann's thoughts:

- Our worth to our clients is in how we help them change their life / career / business permanently for the better
- Our income is an outcome of serving well
- Our goal is to become a person of influence such that everyone we touch in our target audience becomes a client, referral source or both
- Our mission, in part, is to reflect who we are as God made us and gives us the free choice to be (personal style, proficiencies, passions, purpose) ... and be that to His honor and glory
- "The generous man will be prosperous, and he who waters will himself be watered." ~ Prov 11:25

Well done Joel!

The Go-Giver is a fantastic book Joel. I recommend everyone read it if they haven't.

I just read the following article, "What is a Go-Giver?", and it really resonated in a very common sense way as relevant to coaches so I thought I'd share it in this forum. I look forward to reviewing the book now to see if there are any additional pearls of wisdom to apply.

A few highlights:
What is a Go-Giver?
How a simple shift in focus can result in greater career and personal success: A new parable illuminates the value of giving Go-getters make things happen. But as great as it is to be a go-getter, Bob Burg believes that being a go-giver is even better. To Burg, co-author (with John David Mann) of the new national bestseller, The Go-Giver: A Little Story About A Powerful Business Idea, being a go-giver means you add value to others in a way that helps them significantly while at the same time increases your own sense of joy and improves your bottom line, both in your business and your personal life.

"5 Laws" shared in the book:
No. 1 is The Law of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment. The key is realizing that price and value are two different things. Price is a dollar amount; value is desirability to the end user. Always strive to provide more in "use value" to your customer than what you charge them—while still making a healthy profit.

No. 2 is The Law of Compensation: Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them. You do so by touching the lives of a lot of people.

No. 3: The Law of Influence is No. 3. Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other peoples' interests first. This might sound a little Pollyanna, but it's actually extremely practical. The golden rule of business is that all things being equal, people will do business with and refer business to those people they know, like, and trust. There's no quicker, more powerful,
or more effective method of eliciting those feelings in others than by focusing on putting their interests first.

No. 4 is The Law of Authenticity: The greatest gift you have to offer is yourself. The most significant way you have of adding value to others' lives is by honoring your own nature—by being genuine and not trying to be someone you're not. Consciously or not, people can tell when you're not being authentic, and it interferes with your interaction just as surely as if you broke off an electrical current. You cannot truly give to another person unless you're being authentic.

No. 5 is The Law of Receptivity: The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving. This is what really brings it home. It says that receiving is good—it's great—because it is a natural result of giving.
