Poll: Good or Evil? I'm working on a new project

To you which is more important knowing about companies violating your faith: involved in things like abortion, pornography, embryonic stem research, homosexuality, etc?

or knowing about companies doing good: companies fulfilling God's purposes and helping society?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this: which is more important to you and why?

Jay,

I think both are important because we need to know which companies (or investments) we should avoid as well as which ones we can trust. However, I generally get a fair amount of information about companies to avoid so, for me, it would be more important to learn about companies (or investments) that I can trust to be family friendly. A lot of people are familiar with the Timothy Plan for investing, but I know there are other companies and places to invest, so I think it's more important to be told about those.

Wow, that's kind of like the old chicken or the egg question. They're both important--we need to know where to send our money as well as where to take it from. I have to say probably the good ones would be a more important direction for new information, though--the rotten ones generally have big budgets, are pretty high-profile and easy to find. I guess that's the nature of sin, though, it comes naturally so we don't have to look very hard to find it.

Jay, I honestly think both are important, but I, personally would prefer to have the positive, faith-based choices in order to make my decisions. I don't think we hear as much about those types of investments and companies and I certainly would want to have that information to work from.

I think its more important to stay positive and focus on the Companies doing the right thing. The more bad copy a Company can get is simply that - copy. Why advertise for the bad behavior?

Keep the Good Companies in focus and let them be recognized as they should. That creates a positive light and brings attention to that kind of desirable behavior.

No need for the 2 cents. :)

I definately think the companies that are striving to make a positive impact and want to honor God,
These are the companies we need to support and promote as long as they produce good quality and value.

I'd rather know first...what good things a company is doing. Why? I think promoting that is better PR.

That's a tough one. I agree with most in this post that both are important and we should focus on the positive.
However, my thoughts lead me to how we got to this society we have today. I believe we got here through slow cultural denigration that came from tolerance of the things that violate our faith and core principles. Once these are gone, what do we have left? It’s like that Casting Crowns song “Slow Fade”. Here are some of the lyrics:

“It’s a slow fade when you give yourself away. It’s a slow fade when black and white turn to gray. And thoughts invade. Choices made. A price will be paid when you give yourself away. People never crumble in a day.”

Powerful stuff… I feel like we are continually giving ourselves away by not standing against what is wrong. Today, we only stand up for what is right. While both are noble, the former is harder. We see this phenomenon in everything from politicians who only care about their ratings in the polls - so they tell us what they think we want to hear - to so many children who have no respect for others - only for themselves and their 'rock star' status.

Stepping out in faith to me means standing against the hard stuff while celebrating the good. It's a balance I think most of us have forgotten because of the influx of media influencing and invading our thoughts and therefore behaviors. We don't want to seem like the ‘right wing wackos' afterall!

But if we don't consider companies' bad practices, then who is going to tackle these hard issues? If not us, then who? It seems to me if we can plant seeds in our current and potential employers about why we would not work for or invest in them, then maybe we can create a thought provoking chain reaction for real change in America. Afterall, it’s tolerance and assimilation that destroys a culture.

I would rather hear about the second, but if you buy Rabbi Daniel Lapin's argument that all businesses help society (and in doing so, fulfill God's purposes), you've got a very large set of businesses to write about. :-D

Those doing good. It helps to know which companies are violating our faith; however, not knowing the positive alternatives leaves one in a financial quandary. If you already know the companies doing good, then the search is over.
