Jonathan's Blogging Journey

I first heard of blogging in the Summer of 2008. I was really fascinated by the idea and concept. It was about the same time that I began a personal mission to discover my true purpose in life. I had spent the previous five years building a start-up executive search firm with a few close friends. Although I was enjoying the journey, I really wanted to find my "fit" in the world... Thanks Jonathan,

I really appreciate your generosity in fielding all my questions!

I have a blog. TheEverydayBlissBlog.com that I posted in nearly everyday for a year but at the time I never gave a thought to ranking for specific key words. It was my hobby only. I am currently redesigning the blog and plan to include the old relevant content in the new site but I'd like to be more strategic. Can you tell me if there might be a good way to determine what some good key words might be for the new site? My site is a bit self improvement orientated and I think with some tweaking some of my old content could be redone to include some other keywords... the thing is I want to know how to select keywords that people are actually interested in. I can easily find "green" key words but they aren't searched on enough to generate any real traffic over on my site. Any ideas?

Looking forward,
Kathy

Hi Kathy,

It is just some made up terminology I use. A niche blog would be if I was only going to write and rank for a specific niche like "patio furniture." I may end up with 5-20 or so post and my domain would contain the keyword. A Super Blog has 200+ posts and would be like a Home & Garden site and cover a wider spectrum and rank for all kinds of keywords from patio furniture, pool fencing, gardening tips. Hope that makes sense.

Jonathan, I saw a comment of yours where you mentioned niche and super blogs. Niche blogs are self explanatory but what is your definition of a super blog ? Can you point me to one of yours so I may grok it better?

Thanks!
Kathy

Hi Mark,

Blogging can do two valuable things for you. 1) Add Value - as you use your gifts and contribute to your passion, you add incredible value into the life of others. 2) You gain credibility - people get an opportunity to learn from you and see that you can be beneficial to their lives.

Hi Carolyne,

It definitely is a learning process for sure. Just take it a little at a time and build upon what you have learned. What you have expressed is the exact reason why I have chosen to walk a small group of people through the process with Hubpages. I believe that it can be a great way to learn the core basics without getting bogged down with the techie side. You can also start to experience the excitement when you see that you are getting ranked for a keyword that you wanted to!

A couple ideas about facebook. One, there are themes that you can use that have the facebook logo and grphic at the top. All you have to do is paste your profile web address in the admin panel or you can install a Facebook dashboard widget like this one.. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/facebook-dashboard-widget/

Hope that helps!

Just starting this blogging thing and I know I have an unbelievable amount of content as God is pushing me to think intentionally, but I just want to hide under a rock when it comes to the tech stuff. I don't get it and don't like it. Slowly I am trying and still feeling overwhelmed. I have started a wordpress blog and was wondering if there is a way to add a link to my facebook page?
Jonathan-thank you for all the rich info you are sharing here, even though a lot of it is over my head I know it is good.

HI Scott,

Nice job on the blogs and getting started. I can tell you do have a passion for writing. Have you thought about taking one of those that you are passionate about and targeting the keywords in an effort to draw more traffic? If you have not watched the videos I would recommend that you do. Way to take action!

I hope to get to this really soon. Let's say you want to target the key word "white furniture." Besides having it in your title, in your URL (which if you use Wordpress they do both for you), you will want to work the main keyword in every 100 words or so. Just work it in naturally, don't over-abuse it. Also, you want to work in similar words as well (cause you can get ranked for those too!). best way to do that is put your main keyword in the Google Keyword Tool and use the next 3-5 words on the list. So, for "white furniture" you might also get:

white bedroom furniture
white leather furniture
antique white furniture

If all this does not make sense I will create a video soon....

Thanks, Jonathan
