I first heard of blogging in the Summer of 2008. I was really fascinated by the idea and concept. It was about the same time that I began a personal mission to discover my true purpose in life. I had spent the previous five years building a start-up executive search firm with a few close friends. Although I was enjoying the journey, I really wanted to find my "fit" in the world... Hey everyone! I sent out a similar message to the group didn't realize I could comment here. Sorry... So a quick recap I started a blog in Oct. and my traffic the past two day has been over 4000 pageviews. I intended to monetize this site but had no idea it would grow so quickly. Many of the creative blogs I follow have sponsors and adds on their paged but I have no idea how to get them. Feel free to stop by and take a look www.tangledhappy.blogspot.com. Any and all suggestions would be greatly apprecitated! Looking forward to hearing from some of you!!

Kathy, you have some great questions. Many of them were some of the same ones that I have worked through myself. The research part does take some time, but at the same time it can help you get clear on what you want to focus on with your site. One technique is to take the domain of a popular blog in your niche and send it through the Google Keyword Tool. It will display for you all the keywords listed on the site as well as the monthly searches.

Lastly, remember that even if a keyword only gets 500-1000 searches a month it still might be a winner. Also, when you have correctly targeted 50 or more of those they add up together rather nicely for lots of traffic. The key is to build back links and get in the top spot for your keyword phrase. They get WAY more clicks than anything else. This picture is proof for you.

Thanks Jonathan,

I really appreciate your generosity in fielding all my questions!

I have a blog. TheEverydayBlissBlog.com that I posted in nearly everyday for a year but at the time I never gave a thought to ranking for specific key words. It was my hobby only. I am currently redesigning the blog and plan to include the old relevant content in the new site but I'd like to be more strategic. Can you tell me if there might be a good way to determine what some good key words might be for the new site? My site is a bit self improvement orientated and I think with some tweaking some of my old content could be redone to include some other keywords... the thing is I want to know how to select keywords that people are actually interested in. I can easily find "green" key words but they aren't searched on enough to generate any real traffic over on my site. Any ideas?

Looking forward,

Hi Kathy,

It is just some made up terminology I use. A niche blog would be if I was only going to write and rank for a specific niche like "patio furniture." I may end up with 5-20 or so post and my domain would contain the keyword. A Super Blog has 200+ posts and would be like a Home & Garden site and cover a wider spectrum and rank for all kinds of keywords from patio furniture, pool fencing, gardening tips. Hope that makes sense.

Jonathan, I saw a comment of yours where you mentioned niche and super blogs. Niche blogs are self explanatory but what is your definition of a super blog ? Can you point me to one of yours so I may grok it better?

Hi Mark,

Welcome to the community. Let me know how I can be a help to you. Your website looks nice. Blogging can do two valuable things for you. 1) Add Value - as you use your gifts and contribute to your passion, you add incredible value into the life of others. 2) You gain credibility - people get an opportunity to learn from you and see that you can be beneficial to their lives.

Hi Carolyne,

It definitely is a learning process for sure. Just take it a little at a time and build upon what you have learned. What you have expressed is the exact reason why I have chosen to walk a small group of people through the process with Hubpages. I believe that it can be a great way to learn the core basics without getting bogged down with the techie side. You can also start to experience the excitement when you see that you are getting ranked for a keyword that you wanted to!

A couple ideas about facebook. One, there are themes that you can use that have the facebook logo and grphic at the top. All you have to do is paste your profile web address in the admin panel or you can install a Facebook dashboard widget like this one.. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/facebook-dashboard-widget/

Hope that helps!
