Strategic Planning 101-advice? books to read? best resources to use?

Hello Everyone!!

2012 is coming to a close....

I am thinking ahead towards 2013 and have my eyes set on some BHAGS but I need a plan!!

What resources have used to help you lay out your Strategic Plan for your businesses? finances? and everything else?

What other tips or advice can you share with the community as well as me?

What works?

What doesn't work?

Great blogs on the subject?

Coaches that specialize in helping people with this?

Books that have helped?

Conferences or workshops you would recommend?

Just all things Strategic Planning....

would love to know your thoughts!!

Thanks!

Kim--I'm a little late to the party but would like to chime in:

1. I agree with those who have suggested John Maxwell materials--typically all very good

2.  Justin Lukasavige really helped me strategically plan for my ministry launch

3.  Although Chasing Skinny Rabbits (John Trent) is geared much towards ministry, I believe it has many principles about focusing on our targets/goals/plans

4.  When I was in college/seminary, we had a planning process--start with your philosophy (guiding principles), then state 1-3 objectives you needed to accomplish that philosophy.  Under each objective, create strategies to accomplish the objective, then goals (dated and concrete in nature) to accomplish the strategies followed by specific action plans (small steps to achieve the goals)--this may not be exactly what you're looking for but it does help to think through what needs to occur and how to make it happen

Hope any or all of this helps!

Blessings,

Randall Hall

Synergy for Ministry

Hi Randall,

That book sounds great!

I am going to have to track that down! My goals are ministry focused so it sounds like

it would be right up my alley and be very helpful!

Where did you go to seminary/college?

Thank you for joining the conversation here!

Kim

Kim--I graduated from Mississippi College, attended New Orleans seminary and then graduated from Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth.  I have an online ministry directed to church musicians/worship leadership (http://www.synergyforministry.com) that I've launched but am now trying to gain some traction.  It's actually a membership site and I've been having to do some strategic planning on how to engage more people, etc.

Great post, Kim!  I've already gained a great resource from James Woosley and his worksheet!  The best I can recommend is what I myself have read and tried to apply in my own life.  Here are a list of books I highly recommend for inspiration, motivation, and accountability to yourself as you invest in yourself next year!

My Motivational Recommendations

Hope these help!

I was just starting to think about strategizing for 2013.  I have a lot to think about, and I really like your idea of blogging about ideas.  I think that might be a good way for me to further define my interests and niche.  I think it will also keep me accountable to myself, the process, and to working toward my dreams.  Looking forward to learning and growing.  One book I read several years ago that was very insightful was _Snap, Crackle, Stop_ by Barbara Quinn.  It's about career change.
