Today I was robbed. Literally.

Let me explain.

Epic Setback

For the last month and a half I have been putting together an audio product to sell on my site TheWorkPreneur.com. The product featured interviews with some of the best of the best in regards to business and entrepreneurship. Many of the people interviewed you have heard of or know about through association (Pat Flynn from SmartPassiveIncome, and Justin Bieber's voice coach, for example).

I have been recording all of the interviews on my laptop.

But today, my laptop was stolen out of my car while I did my grocery shopping.

Is this my fault? I'm partially to blame for keeping the computer in the car and not in the trunk. But I was also a victim (the word I loathe the most) of a little bad luck and bad timing.

Needless to say, a month's worth of work- and amazing interviews- are all gone.

Rising Above

I have already contacted a majority of those interviewed to explain and ask for another twenty minutes of their time in order that we might re-record.

My hope is that because of their generosity, they will accept to re-interview. If not, I'll find others I'm sure.

There is another benefit as well, and that is the second time around is bound to be better for the product itself.

Thirdly, by connecting with some of the interviewees again, I strenghten my relationship with each of them, which will benefit both of our successes in the future.

Am I mad as hell about being violated and taken from? You bet.  But epic comebacks are only for those who get up after the fall- for those who learn, move on, and do it better during round two.

Ryan,

Sorry to hear about the theft, unfortunate way to learn a lesson. If I may make one suggestion invest in a backup service such as Carbonite. While no service is 100% it could save you time and energy in the future. I hope they catch the thief and you get your laptop back.

Thanks, Paul. I appreciate the support. I definitely am learning a lesson about backing up. I will check out Carbonite.

I second Paul's recommendation.   I would lay awake at night if I did not use Carbonite.  My computer could disappear anytime and I would be fully functional with 100% of my files within 15 minutes.

Dan, thanks for the input. I will look into the service. Fortunately some have written back already and will re-do the interview; however, the pain is in the wasted time and work repetition. At least I'm learning from my lesson, which is priceless I suppose.

Ryan,

That stinks! I had something stolen form me once and, to be honest, the worst part was the well-meaning friends and family telling me I won't be so naive next time or that I'd do something different next time so that wouldn't happen again. I know that they wanted to sound helpful, though I think subconsciously they were searching for a reason to blame me so that they wouldn't feel at risk of a random crime happening to them, but I felt like screaming at them, "I didn't do anything wrong! They stole from me! And when God judges us, He won't hold anything against me for someone else stealing from me!"

Way to have a great attitude and keep moving forward. You're an inspiration!

Scott, thanks for the encouragement. I'm doing better today, and those I interviewed are willing to be re-interviewed. Thanks for the kind words!

Ryan,

Thank you for sharing this challenge and more importantly how you are rising above it. Hind site is always 20/20 as the saying goes, but the ability to not just think about what could have been and move forward towards what could be is very encouraging. Great attitude and thank you for sharing with us a reminder of always looking to the bright side of things to come!

Gary, thanks for your input. I'm doing better after a few days. Had a little panic attack on Monday, just as a result of feeling like I had lost control again. But doing better now as many of the folks are willing to re-interview. I think each interview ill go a lot smoother as well.

I hope this will turn into a blessing in disguise and your next versions will rock! It will all be ok.   Breathe and start again :)

Good for you...Don't let that person steal your determination too.

Great attitude Ryan!  It sucks that it got stolen but all you can do is learn from it, move on and think, "What is good about this situation?", like you are doing.  Maybe I need to renew my Carbonite account.  Hey, maybe you can get an affiliate with Carbonite.  You have a great testimony for having it.

Good luck with the new product launch.
