Absolutely purchase the domain name now. They are inexpensive and all yours! I buy mine from www.name.com but there are many others that offer great prices too. I have found that name.com gives great customer service should you ever need help.
Buy it now....before someone else does!

Hi Sharon,

You can definitely purchase a domain name and just hold on to it until you're ready to use it. I agree with Bob that you may want to go ahead and do that before someone else gets that idea. You just have to pay the fee for the domain which is usually about $10 per year and most companies let you purchase more than one year at a time and auto-renew when the time is up.

I purchase my domain names from www.godaddy.com. They have a pretty useful member area where you can keep up with all of your domains if you begin to purchase more.

Sharon - Like Tripp, we use godaddy.com. Anytime I have a creative thought I may go grab a domain name. We have about 70-80 at any given time. Securing it gives us a year to then decide if it's something we want to keep. Don't hesitate if there is something you are considering - and make sure you can get the .com suffix.

What I would love to do is a website/blog on living simple, debt free, homemaking, stuff on that order. I know I probably need to narrow it down. But at least I feel like I am starting.

My wife has a blog very similar to what you are thinking about doing check it out: www.shoestringsend.com. She uses Blogger.com as a platform for her blog. Blogger (Owned by Google) It is fairly easy to learn and use and free. Typepad.com is also a good platform to start blogging on- it's relatively easy to learn but they charge (the least expensive plan is $4.95). You can redirect your new domain name to automatically point your blog address at either Blogger, Typepad or Wordpress.

Inexpensive hosting is relatively easy to find, its sometimes finding the person who can give you a hand. I host with a server from hostgator.com for my sites. I'm able to offer hosting to friends and non-profs cheap (or free) and defer my costs some and give back to my community.

Yes, having a decent easy to remember domain is important. Along with finding Medical insurance for your employees. It can be one of the most consequential decisions that you make for your company.

I just want to say that giving your wife's story was very helpful to me. i too have the google blog which is posted on my profile. However I was getting a little discouraged when I wasn't getting any hits. After reading this I went back and realized, duh, I didn't invite any followers :-). Thanks for sharing.
