Non-Profit Assistance
I am trying to do some research on beginning a NPO in the Houston area, and I would like a little direction in this realm. I am seeking someone to sit down with in the Houston area.
My plan begins with a small idea for a group I have already established. From there, I would like to develop it into a much larger, more sustainable organization.
If anyone has any references or suggestions regarding this matter, I would greatly appreciate it.

My current "group" is a cycling team I created four years ago that participates in an annual ride for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. I have taken small corporate donations for advertisement space on our jerseys, and then the funds are transferred to the NMSS Lone Star Chapter. The team members do not pay a member fee. They only pay their way to ride. So, I would say public charity, but I anticipate building it into a larger organization, focused more on the importance of balance and accountability, that can go into schools, etc.

With a clear mission and purposes you can support another existing NPO is one way to scale up your operations to the point where you can launch your own 501c3 while accomplishing your charitable objectives in conjunction with another NPO without having to incur the costs of applying for exemption and costs of incorporation. That way you can find an organization with same or similar charitable objectives, come alongside and offer to assist them in fundraising through the mechanisms that inspire you. Check out Running Hope at www.runninghope.org they are on a parallel track as you. You likely know already, but to become your own NPO your need to form the organization and apply for exemption with IRS. See Form 1023 at IRS website to assess steps you'll need to take.
