Praise the Lord that I still breathe, and I have suffered no major injuries except bruises, and sprains. I was riding my bike today, and was on the sidewalk (no bike lane) and a car coming out of a driveway slammed me from the side and I went flying on the concrete and almost underneath the car. My head did not hit the ground, however my bike was totaled. By SC law its okay for cars to slam into bikes when they are on the sidewalk (yes literally). The driver admitted he was at fault because he did not look before he turned out, but by SC law it was perfectly okay to slam into me, or any other bike rider when they are on a sidewalk.
I would say that angels were looking out for me tonight as it was far from luck. But with these kinds of laws, its no wonder I see so few bicycle riders on SC roads. In the part of SF Bay Area in California where I am from I see bicycle riders all the time. I have suffered some bruises and was in total pain prior to taking a pain medication. However I have put antibiotics on my bruises and probably will be fine.
I need to be at court in March to get a $238 fee waived or I need to pay the fee + the cost of a new bike. But I wonder if I should even bother to get one since SC laws discourage owning a bike. You cant ride on the sidewalk, and if there is no bike lane, then you need to ride with the traffic.
Amazingly my Blackberry survived the accident and suffered no damage. I have a otter-box case for it which the car hit when it hit me and I went on the ground under the car. I have had a great experience with the Blackberry since 2009, and I am sorry that others have not had such an experience, but mine continues to tick and it has been rained on, dropped many times, yet still ticks. The ambulance looked at me and said I was fine. I was in shock after the accident, but only suffered some bruises and sprains, praise the Lord!!
I have a book on angels by David Jeremiah which I need to read.

John,
Glad that though you took a licking, you kept on ticking.
In a recent study of Ecclesiastes, I was confronted with some pretty hard hitting questions, particularly because they came at a time of heavy self-reflection, death of a friend, etc.
Just a thought - I know that you take issue with some of the "self help" mentality, and in all honesty, I may be with you on SOME of that - though, again, in all honesty, I'd probably be more on that side than not. Here is just a thought that has hit me recently, and that I'd like to share with you, mostly because our minds are working the same now:
At the end of our lives, our ability to influence, attain, share, give, impact - will be gone. 150 years from now, no one will know John Wolf or Jeremy James. However, God has not only entrusted us, He's commanded us - to live a life that will cause an impact beyond our borders and outside of our time frame. I believe that we'll know when we're doing that - we'll be "alive." So, work on finding out what God has called you to do - and hop to it.
Maybe your calling, at least temporarily, will have something to do with bicycle safety in SC.

We do not all agree on that site neither on secondary issues. However regarding self-help, the prosperity gospel, and other things that a number of people here hold too, are universally shunned on that site.
Regarding your question. Yes by all means be an influence in your area. This does not always translate to a job, but if it is possible find a job where you fit in best and enjoy. However because of the curse this is not always possible. If it is not, then serve in your church.
Permalink Reply by John Wolf on February 7, 2012 at 12:29pm Another strong component of the Baptist Board is that people do exegesis and their authority is not self-help, or the opinions of certain authors and motivational speakers.
The baptist Board has lots of fights regarding secondary issues, but with the issues mentioned in your post we universally agree on.
Just curious - how are many of the things in the previous 2 posts relevant to this conversation? It just seems that if you're trying to exalt that board to members on this one. Just a thought.

Permalink Reply by Colleen Reiter on February 7, 2012 at 6:12pm Some additional thoughts, John, from the perspective of having had personal experiences with concussions & having coached and worked closely with individuals who have had brain injuries ranging from mild traumatic brain injuries(concussions) to severe brain injuries with severe short-term memory loss.
The head doesn't need to hit anything to get a concussion. The brain is very fragile and gets bruised easily when it is slammed up against the skull from a sudden impact elsewhere to the body. My suggestion is that you monitor any symptoms closely. Also be aware that pain medication may decrease the likelihood of you noticing other important symptoms. It's never too late to get checked out at the ER. Go to the Brain Injury Association(BIA) website for their list of "Brain Injury Warning Signs" at www.biausa.org. Sometimes symptoms may linger or arise later. The BIA website will help you identify symptoms that need to be checked. Keep trusting God! Colleen

- Numbness
- Excessive drowsiness
- Severe Headache
- Weakness in your arms or legs
- Dizziness or loss of vision
- Slurred speech
- Loss of consciousness or confusion
- Vomiting or nausea
I do have weakness in my legs, but according to the ambulance this is normal and will be so for a few days. My legs are already feeling better than they were yesterday. But thats the only sign I have had.
Glad you are safe and were protected! My hubby was on his bike and hit. He was fine but the bike had some damage. He just stopped riding after that. His bike was our second car for a long time. He drives 3-4 hours a day over hazardous conditions to care for our family. Once our mortgage is set up in April, we hope to make some serious career changes. I'm so grateful that Dave Ramsey recommends Dan and I came to visit here. "God moves in mysterious ways his wonders to perform......."

Permalink Reply by John Wolf on February 8, 2012 at 10:31am Thank you so much Vickie I appreciate it. I am very fortunate. John MacArthur has a book called "Anxious for Nothing" and writes about angels in 1 chapter. David Jeremiah also has a book "Angels" and writes more extensively. These books are helpful and I can understand them better after the accident.
Yes no question that Dave is a gifted communicator. I agree with him in principal on debt. However I do not agree with him on his particular approach to debt, I do agree with him in principal. James MacDonald preached a great series on debt in recent days. He differianted between consumer debt, and medical, car, student loan type debts. He also does not say that getting rid of a CC is for everyone. For some its the only option, but others can manage them. I for one got a free round trip flight after I bought a candy bar with a CC last year.
I don't agree with Dave 100% but I still value his opinions. So far I pretty much agree with all I've read or heard from Dan. My hubby has had some very close calls especially on his commutes and divine intervention has definitely been involved.
I avoid debt as much as possible. My credit card company owes me money :) not the other way around. My oldest got her BA and her first car without going into debt but when that car died we helped her out and she got a loan. My second borrowed some money for school but it was paid off within a year, third is debt free so far.... the rest are still young but good savers for the future. Often debt is due to medical issues these days-"there for the grace of God go I". I'll be debt free next week but then we're buying our house....
