Looks like I start tomorrow at new job 8:30am. Train for 2 weeks on 1st shift and then switch to swing shift 3:45p - 12:15a. The good thing about that shift is I have time during day to take care of things and if I do not like the job I will have time to interview during the day. I think it will be a great fit Job is about 15-20 minutes away.
But there is one thing. This company does not mandate steel toe shoes like my former employer did. I will still wear steel toe shoes for my own safety as I do not wish to be the example for a future policy like what happened to someone at my former employer and why they created such a policy. I knew of one guy at the company who got his foot run over by a forklift and the steel toe shoes saved his foot! If this is a problem for them, then the job will not be a good fit for me, as I wont be taking it easy regarding safety. I will still take all the common sense and safety concerns to the new employer. At former employer we had safety meeting everyweek, and many examples of employees who did not follow safety and lost a foot, got a hand chopped off, or such were given.
I also remember a 5,000 pallet almost dropping on a material handler because of a safety issue created by a forklift driver at one employer whom did not value safety as much. I also almost got tagged by a falling object working for that employer once. Its plain and simple. If I am a problem because I value safety, and employer is light on safety, then I will not work there.

congrats on the new job! Wear your shoes and be safe. Perhaps they suggest it but don't require it. I personally like the freedom to choose.
