Application Developer help needed

I have a software product idea that I want to develop and would like to reseach the development cost side to it. The "product" is a dashboard-style report for business owners. I am not sure how much detail to go into here, so please let me know what additional information is needed. I will be happy to expand on the concept and delivery to provide more insight.

Can anyone suggest how I can determine the cost to develop this product and produce it?

First, you'll need to have your idea written out as clearly as possible. A good software developer should be able to take those specifications and give you an estimate. I would ask for the hours & the cost per hour. You might be able to find an inexpensive resource at elance.com.

What kind of "dashboard?" Most of the major reporting packages contain dashboard modules integrated with their report writing application. If you can define what it is, what it does and why it is unique to what is in the market today it shouldn't be too hard get a rough estimate of development time. Cost is another issue. you can go "cheap" and offshore development to the Eastern Bloc countries (South America is also becoming a hot spot for development.) Or, you can pay more for development and keep it in the US but eliminate some of the costs of managing the communications part of the project.

Lots of options.

Thanks Scott, Scott and Jordan - I appreciate the comments and suggestions. This little project is currently on the back burner, but I do want to explore it again sometime. I believe there is an opportunity to make better use of all of the information we capture.
