I'm not sure what category this belongs in so I am hoping it gets seen in miscellaneous.
Here's the deal, I have a web site that I want to build that shares data sheets for vintage/obsolete electronic components. These data sheets are copyrighted material by the companies that manufacture(d) the components, however they've always been freely available as promotional material.
I would not be selling the data sheets themselves or selling access to the data sheets. Nevertheless I suspect I would be violating copyright by hosting and distributing the material.
Where do you think I stand on the copyright issue?
This is a web site for hobbyists and not really intended to be a money making venture, although if it made a few dollars with ads or affiliate links that would be fine.
I've pretty much decided to go ahead and just do it, and just deal with anybody that might complain later.
Let me know if you have any insights on this area.

personally I'd get permission. I've gotten permission from people before to use their stuff for free even in a paid for newsletter. All it takes is a call/ email to check it out.
