Hey Lauri- Sounds like you're an entrepreneur through and through with your start ups! In looking at your varied business endeavors I guess a few questions I'd ask are. Have you been able to narrow your focus into what you'd like to do for your next business?
You mention a degree in business or journalism----again, can you narrow your focus for what you'd like to do? (And BTW- if you're interested in journalism, I strongly feel one need not need a college degree for that. I taught myself the ropes of freelance writing and my educational background is actually in nursing.)
If you haven't done so already, Lauri- I recommend taking the DISC profile before you make any big decisions. It is so helpful in identifying strengths and interests and I feel it's foundational when pondering career/life transitions.
Another recommendation----get a good couch. Here you can find Chuck Bowen....if you're in the Nashville area....Sandra Wimpleburg is wonderful. Snoop around here, there are some great options!

Laurie,

You'll keep chasing those opportunities and they won't "workout" until you are willing to take the chance doing what you really enjoy. Once you make that decision you will have to stay strong and not fall back to old patterns when things get tough. (This is all experience speaking.)

Based on your post, it seems you are going after the next great thing not necessarily your passions; what will make the most money not what will make you happy and productive.

Here are my suggestions they match Theresa's:

1. Follow Dan Miller's course
2. Spend money on a coach before spending money on college
3. Use #1 and #2 to get clarity and a solid plan
4. Follow the plan

One thing I will say (stealing this from Warren Buffet) By getting any type of education you are investing in yourself. No matter where you go, what you do, and/or what you lose, no one can take that from you.

On the other hand I am in school and I am NOT and academia style person. I think its a waste of money. But after I thought about the above quote I figured two years of my life for a BSA isn't going to kill me and could open opportunities in the future.

It looks like you're getting some excellent advice from the others here. I think you really need to find your passion. Going through the 48 Days process and the Personality profile (DISC) is an excellent place to start. There are a number of good coaches from the 212 Connection on this network who focus on various areas of coaching. Check out the 212 Connection. I would do these steps before running back to school without a firm plan.

Thats one great thing about Indiana Wesleyan University, the program that I am in you complete the DISC in your first class. It's a great way for us as students to create our work groups and understand eachother (and ourselves while we are at it) while going through the academia process.

Thanks for the great advice. I was rambling a bit on that one. Nursing is a big industry. Do you like the writing better? What is the disc profile?

Lauri- I was made to write. And it's taken me years of wandering around to realize this. Halfway through my nursing training, I realized I hated poking people with things though I am by nature, a nurturing person. I love the science of the medical field.

Nursing is a HUGE field but if you don't love what you do it can be miserable! (I guess like anything else for that matter.)

What I love about writing is the fact that I can become an "expert" on pretty much anything I want to learn about and then I can write about it. The topics are endless and the invitation to learn and research limitless...doesn't get any better than this as far as I'm concerned!

Biggest key is asking yourself: What makes me come alive? Who was I created to be?

You're in a great supportive place here to explore those questions. Have fun with the process---it really is a great adventure!

The 212 Connection is not limited to existing businesses. I joined before I started my business, but was looking to do my own thing. There are fantastic resources available with the connection, including weekly teleseminars. You can get information about the membership at the 212 Connection. I have found the resources through the connection to be very helpful as I start my business. Heck, I even met Theresa at a roundtable event!! I anticipate moving to my biz full time in 2009. Let me know if I can be of further assistance in this area. A number of us understand your struggle.

Thanks for the suggestion! I will check it out, I have been getting Dan's newsletter for a couple of years now along with his books and CD's. Have you read No More Mondays? Did joining 212 help you get an idea for a business or were you already there?

Hi Lauri,

I have read No More Mondays and recommend it to clients/friends who are looking into starting their own business. It's an excellent book. I joined 212 right after I decided that I wanted to pursue coaching. I had started feeling the call and passion to coach right before I met Dan and Chuck Bowen. The 212 has been an excellent resource for me to start my business, providing good information and contacts to help me. What has helped me find my calling was to go through the 48 Days process as well as finally determining what I am passionate about. I hope this helps.
